Tag/Notes | For all the guilt that had settled heavy in her chest upon her confession, the Oracle felt a renewed surge of worry at her lover's reaction to her words. The gods' plan? He thought they'd plotted against him? Why? But her expression would knit even harder with worry when the word "accursed" flowed from the man's lips. Accursed? Immortal? Confusion stacked heavy with each moment like a dozen bricks. Just what had she missed? What had Somnus done? And what did he mean by monster? Was he saying that all of the stories she'd heard... No, no, she wouldn't assume something so horrid. Surely there was a different explanation... "A timeless age?" she uttered softly, stepping toward him again despite the distance he'd put between them. "You've been... You never..." She couldn't quite finish the statement, as if confirming aloud his lifespan beyond the ordinary was suddenly some unfathomable event. But, a small voice in her conscience spoke up, if he really was immortal, that made the stories she'd heard more plausible. What if Caius hadn't been lying? What if... "I don't believe it," she said firmly, but with a kindness all her own. "I don't believe you're a monster. But immortality...how?" She reached for his hand, not quite grasping the gravity of it--nor the method. "What of Somnus? What of the gods?" She was trying to understand. She was trying to wrap her delicate heart around an ages-long struggle. Even deeper, she was trying to keep hold on her faith. |
