@open he's trying to be good
He'd forgotten what it was like to actually work. It'd always been building nations, being regal, being the ruler. When he wasn't doing something like that, he was usually sleeping until Elidibus had to kick him awake for something. That never went over well, Hades liked his naps. But he'd at least get the hell up and get back to causing rejoings, and then it was off to naptime again. Needless to say, it'd been a long time since he'd done any actual, regular work, dating back to the time of Amaurot. Of course, there was always his tenure as the Honorable Emet-Selch, but, well, this wasn't politics, or government, this was just... could he even call it blue collar? He wasn't putting that much effort into it. Still, that little bit of effort got him quite far.
He stared at the empty building that he'd managed to purchase. Where'd he get the money for something like that? Well, his creation magicks still had some power here in this new world. So it was a matter of simply appearing well dressed and handing over the money he'd managed to "somehow" acquire. Once that had been done, he simply shut the door, closed the binds, and weaved his magic as aether took form, carpets, furniture, lighting. Some may call it mundane, pointless, but to Hades, it was as simple as breathing for him. When it was done, and he found himself in the middle of a luxurious office, he smiled. Yep, now he could officially open for business. Persephone had always told him he'd had a knack for finding soul mates.
So, why not a matchmaking service? He could literally pair people up by their souls, so it seemed a bit... easy.
In truth, it wasn't grand, and if he had told himself he'd have been doing it but a year ago, his past self would undoubtedly have been perturbed if not incredulous. But, he'd made it a point to not interfere, just once. He'd owed Alexander... or was it D'usian? Lycor--No, Lycoris was Alexander's wife, not a Warrior of Light. What about that goofy looking dip with the brown hair? Ever since the Exarch's trick, the Warriors of Light all seemed to blend together for him. Different incarnations of the same being. Regardless, he would let the sundered races move on, asking only to be remembered. He would not interfere, and if anything, he figured he could "turn over a new leaf" as the saying went, correct?
He could see Elidibus's reaction now. "How very unlike you to err so gravely." Hades muttered out loud to himself, putting on his best Emissary impression.
Still, every attempt to move on from the past, and join the new races had failed, but maybe this time would be different. He owed it to the Warrior of Light to at least give it another try. But he would never forget. Hades looked at the door for a moment, wondering what was missing, before it hit him, and with a simple snap of his fingers, a small bell materialized above the doorway.
After Somnus had abandoned Asael to deal with the guards that had shown up to break up their fight, he spent some time flitting between Sonora’s rooftops on his quest to escape from the soldiers. He didn’t imagine that they would pose any real threat to him, but the technology level here was so far past anything he had ever seen before. It would be more trouble than it was worth to fight them if they pulled out a weapon he was unfamiliar with. Far easier to run away, even if it was a blow to his pride.
Well, he’d conquer this nation before long. He knew better than anyone how to be patient and play the long game.
Once Somnus had run a couple blocks by streaking between the various rooftops, he threw his sword down into an empty alleyway below, warping after it in a blue flash of light. Straightening up, he banished the blade back to his armiger before brushing the debris off his robes. He was a little out of breath from his fight with Asael, but that couldn’t be helped. Hopefully he’d gotten far enough away to at least blend in with the crowd.
As Somnus emerged from the alleyway and stepped out onto the sidewalk, he bit back a curse to see a few Sonoran guards further down the street, their guns visible at their sides. They hadn’t yet noticed him, and he would prefer to keep it that way to avoid this confrontation from spiraling out of his control.
Casting his eyes around him, Somnus paused as he realized that he was standing under a sign that signaled a shop-front. He was too close to read the sign or see what kind of store it was, but at this point it hardly mattered. He needed a place to wait this out. Gripping the door handle, Somnus quickly entered and let the door fall shut behind him as the sound of a bell chimed out his arrival.
Truthfully, Somnus was a bit surprised at how nice the shop was inside. The owner must have spent quite a bit of money furnishing the office, but he didn’t have much time to dwell on that as he found himself in the presence of a young man.
“Ah...hello,” he greeted the red-haired man a tad uncertainly. He had an eccentric appearance between the white streak in his hair and his amber eyes. “Might I see what you’re offering?”
Hopefully that was vague enough. Somnus would sooner pretend to be a customer than to admit that he was avoiding the guards.

@somnus from one ruler to another
Yes, lots of money spent. Real money that he worked for and definitely earned. Hades felt himself dozing off a little. Well, he'd know if someone came in. Maybe some more naptime was always good. He closed his eyes, and images of better days began to float gently into his consciousness. The salve that always made existence more bearable; dreams of a better time. His amber eyes began to flutter awake as he heard the bell ring though, and he felt a sense of uneasiness and excitement. This was it! His first custome--ahhhhh shit. And all his hope immediately died when he got a good look at the lad. Oh there was nothing too off about his appearance, save for how regal it was. But what made Hades such a great matchmaker for soul mates was the fact he could see their soul.
And this man's soul? Blindingly bright, as if blessed by the divine, with that subtle hue that just oozed "I'm special and I know it, you bitch." Add in the regal attire and the subtle body language he'd spent eons studying, and it only took a moment to realize he was dealing with some form of nobility or royalty. And those two were always a problem when it came to something like this. Many just assumed that, being blue blooded they had an unnatural charisma that made them desirable to whichever was their type. They usually didn't understand it was the wealth, the land, and the power that made them attractive.
Most of them were boors once you stripped that away.
But, well, he'd try. In all honesty, mentally he was debating throwing in the towel; pairing up blue bloods could be difficult. So he smiled. If nothing else, he could take some joy from having a challenge. "Ah, yes, welcome to Galvus's dating agency." Not a total lie. Galvus was part of a name he'd once used, after all. And now it became clear what, exactly, Somnus had walked into. "Please, sit down, my lord," he spoke, tipping his hand ever so slightly as he motioned to the leather padded cherry wood chairs. Give them the respect they desired, after all. "I'm confident we can find someone just right for you." Probably. It was a challenge.
There was something a tad unsettling about the man’s eyes--perhaps it was the unusual color, but they also gave Somnus the impression that the man was looking right through him. Somnus shifted in place, no longer sure that the goosebumps on his arms were from the swirling snow outside, but the man finally smiled professionally before he could decide that perhaps he’d be better off taking his chances with the guards looking for him outside.
Still, it felt like cold water dumped over his head when he learned exactly what type of shop he’d chosen to hide in.
Dating? A casual term that he had only heard since coming to Zephon, but he could guess as to the meaning. “Then this is a courting business? You arrange marriages?” Somnus had no need for another wedding of course--he would never dream of dishonoring his queen that way when it would make his two children illegitimate. But he supposed that until everything outside quieted down, it couldn’t hurt to play along.
Despite everything, Somnus was at least pleased that the eccentric man was paying him the proper respect. “You have a keen sense of perception,” the king complimented him with a faint smirk as he crossed the room and took a seat in the chair that the shopkeeper had gestured towards. True, he would have infinitely preferred ‘your majesty,’ but it was still the first time since coming here that someone had acknowledged his superiority. His misgivings about the man were easily silenced with that in mind. At least he knew his place.
“Then I suppose you must be Galvus.” Somnus once again swept his eyes over the man’s robes and streaked hair. “Shall I assume you to be relatively new here as well?” Galvus looked as out of place as he did at any rate, but perhaps the man was just odd.
Somnus wasn’t able to contain a chuckle at Galvus’ confidence that he could find someone who was compatible with him. “I am curious to see what you will come up with at any rate,” he said as he brushed his hair to the side. His hand came back slightly damp. Curse all this snow in Sonora. “How exactly does this work?” His soul mate was likely waiting for him back home, but as long as the man’s answer wasn’t one of the guards chasing him now, then there were no wrong answers per se.
That was a common reaction, yes. That feeling you were being stared right through. Because you were. He did not do things by... well, okay, if he felt it would achieve the same result, he may in fact do things by half. Look, he sowed the seeds, and let man do the rest. He wasn't out there in the proverbial garden tending to the harvest. He had the predictable lemmings do that for him. However, Hades, or, Galvus, he supposed, was quite happy to get quite a reaction, interjecting rather quickly "With my success rate, it may as well be." Of course, it was just starting, but part of the whole business thing was puffing yourself up! That and uh, while he'd never made a living out of it, he had helped out some lonely Amaurotines who got the same idea he had.
Placing an arm behind his back, he bowed slightly as he holds an arm in front of him. "You don't last long without one. Your mannerisms and overall projection has a regal air to it, so I'd simply assumed you were of superior stock. I'd imagined... Emperor, yes? But I didn't want to assume on that particular front." Really, they all had the same mannerisms. A snooty noble was a snooty noble, and each despite their actual title, always believed they were deserving of the highest regal title; that of Emperor. That's how it'd always been. Emperors beat Kings beat Dukes beat Counts and so on. So politely assuming emperor was usually taken as a sign of flattery.
He did give a smile though. Do his job, do his job. Don't make any snide remarks. "But I am indeed, Galvus, and while I am new to this world, I am not new to my techniques." He took his own seat. "I ask you questions, and ask you to talk about yourself and what you'd like in a partner, and then I find someone to match you up with." Right, easy enough, wasn't it? "We'll begin with you. Tell me about yourself." Somehow, he had a feeling that such a thing wouldn't be an issue for the man before him.
The eccentric man replied a bit flippantly to Somnus’ question over the nature of the business, though the reason why went over his head. Somnus recognized confidence when he heard it of course, but he didn’t really understand the response. If this shop was about matchmaking, then what could it possibly relate to if not marriage?
Unless this was a service of ill-repute that focused on carnal interactions instead. The more that Somnus eyed Galvus, the more that he suspected that to be the case, but he still followed the man over to the desk with a sigh. It was a tad uncomfortable given his station, but nothing that he couldn’t handle for an hour or so. This wasn’t Lucis after all, so he didn’t need to worry about unseemly rumors floating around.
Galvus gave him a slight bow, and Somnus glanced down at the man’s robes as he did so. “Truthfully, your clothing is rather nice for your line of work. I would never have guessed that you were a shopkeeper.” It was a reluctant bit of praise, given that the man had the good sense to recognize him as royalty on first glance. “Close enough,” he responded boldly to the assumption that he was an emperor, glad that he could still garner that level of respect. “I’m the first king of a new nation.” It might be more apt to say that he was the king, since he certainly held no power yet here in Zephon, but Somnus refused to speak of it in the past tense. He had worked too hard to obtain the throne to let it go as easily as that.
Galvus explained the process as they sat down across from each other at the desk, and Somnus decided that it didn’t sound terrible. At any rate, there were plenty of worse things that he could be doing while hiding from the guards than talking about himself to a stranger. He certainly wasn’t shy to these sorts of things.
“As you like. Somnus Lucis Caelum,” he introduced himself to the red-haired man with a nod, sitting up a little straighter in his chair as he began. His story deserved to be told with pride, after all. “I have yet to live here for very long--I come from a world named Eos, where I recently began ruling over the kingdom of Lucis. I was chosen by the gods for the honor.”
Or so it went unstated. The Draconian had accepted Somnus’ rule readily enough, and while the Oracle had told him that Ardyn had been the one chosen, the girl had clearly lied. It was laughable to have expected his brother’s fiancee to be an unbiased messenger anyway. The snake had clearly just wanted to prop up Ardyn and to become queen herself.
That was all in the past though, and Somnus reminded himself to control his temper. It wasn’t Galvus’ fault of course, but even just thinking about Ardyn and Aera was enough to send his blood boiling.
“What else?...” He mused aloud to himself, trying to remember what drivel he and his wife had shared with each other when they had first met. “Hobbies, I suppose? Generally I have very little free time anymore, but I always enjoyed chess, hunting, fishing…” In Somnus’ opinion, it would be a rare woman who would be interested in any of those things, but he decided he should check the box anyway. “Does any of that help?”

@somnus
Hades could only give a smirk as he looks over his clothes. Yes, he'd made quite the point to actually dress nicely for this; dress codes did matter, after all. If you were royalty, you dressed like royalty. Still, he was quite content to let Somnus talk. Though admittedly, he wasn't exactly aware of the "hunted by guards" part of this whole ordeal. As long as they didn't burst in here and ruin his nice office that he had spent time creating, oh well. But, he would simply heap on the praise. "Ah, a Founder King, from which begins an entire mythology. Perhaps I had underestimated you as it is, can't win them all. In my defense though, mythological figures don't often walk through my door." His hobbies made sense too. Things that were kingly and regal in nature befitting his status.
Except fishing. He wasn't sure where that came from.
But he smiled and folded his hands together. "But, that does work and I thank you. I may leave out you being royalty, if you would prefer that. If we're going to find someone for you, I'd rather they be interested in you first and not just your wealth and prestige, Your Majesty." In truth, he wasn't sure how Somnus would react to that, but he wasn't going to lie there. Many would simply see the title king and jump on that for the power and wealth being their significant other would bring. And if he was going to be successful at this; he needed to make sure that the people he paired up actually lasted!
Hades followed along, taking a pen to scribble everything down on a sheet of paper, just to make sure he could reference back to it later. Of course, that was a brief overview of who he was, and he took great pride in being royalty. That did speak somewhat of his personality, but that he would keep to himself. No need to overtly insult the man. "Now, how would you describe yourself? What kind of personality do you have?" He could see it now, but well, may as well give him the chance to give it a go. Needless to say, he would find this to be rather fascinating, even if there tended to be a trend. "Ah, and any family, as well?" Oh. Oh dear.
“I have heard that the later generations referred to me as the founder king,” Somnus said with no small amount of pride, though he was aware that the words would likely be confusing for the red-haired man. It’s not as if most people were ever able to know what their descendants thought of them after all, but since coming to Zephon, Somnus had met more than a few people who claimed to be from Lucis’ future. It was a pity that most of them hadn’t seemed too fond of him, but it wasn’t as if he needed allies here anyway. He just needed a way back so that he could finish his reign.
Truthfully, Somnus rather liked Galvus so far. He knew how to show respect, between referring to Somnus as a mythological figure and actually using his appropriate title of ‘your majesty.’ Not many had called him that since he’d woken up here, and it put him in such a good mood that he took the man’s suggestion that they not mention his title to any potential suitors in stride.
“Well, you are purportedly the expert.” he mused. “Though I hardly see the issue. Surely they would also be of some prestige and expect nothing less.” It was desired for kings to marry noblewomen after all. His own wife had been from a wealthy family, and his brother’s fiancee had been the Oracle (as little as he liked to think of either of them). It was just how things were done, so Somnus wasn’t quite sure that he understood the problem.
Galvus asked how he’d describe his own personality, and Somnus took a moment to consider that before responding. “I’m certainly a hard-worker, and I’m driven. If I set my eyes on a goal, then I’ll do anything that it takes to reach it. I’m not much for hesitation.” Turning his thoughts towards the man’s second question, Somnus tensed in place, wondering why he wanted to know about his family.
“Is...that relevant?” He asked, while considering the practicality of the matter. It did make sense--a woman would want to know what family she was getting into after all, but it was still with a long-suffering sigh that he answered. “My parents have been dead for over a decade from the starscourge. It’s a blight that’s common in my world. Turns men into monsters.”
Somnus adjusted his arm bracer before continuing. “I do have two young children back home, but...clearly it’s hard to say when I’ll see them again.” The words tasted a tad bitter. He should be there to raise them and to ensure his legacy survived, and instead he was stuck in this mistake of a world. What a joke.
Honestly, Somnus should have left his list of family at that. He usually did when someone asked, but he was already feeling bitter, and when he raised his head, the sight of Galvus’ red hair enraged him enough to continue. “And an older brother I suppose, but he’s worse than dead to me. The biggest travesty that the starscourge ever produced.” What did it matter what he said to a shopkeeper anyway? The worst the man could do was throw him out.

@somnus
Travesty. That word alone told Hades all the world. See, in such an event, the loss of an entire family, words played such a pivotal role in interpretation. Even with their brother as the perpetrator, travesty was not the word Hades would have used. Tragedy, travesty, two similar sounding words, yet the usage of one or the other spoke all the world of the speaker's compassion. So he was dealing with that kind of lord then, was he? One who could watch his family perish and simply write it off. But of course, that was something to work with. Men like Somnus enjoyed flattery and justification, excuses for their action. A way to humanize themselves while making themselves seem superior in one aspect or another. But he continued to write down what Somnus told him, the following words just confirming more of it. Driven, a way to soften the blow that the word ambitious would bring to mind, and yet that was what it was.
Perhaps Somnus was right, but Hades knew enough that this "older brother" was likely the true heir, if things worked the same as they usually did. Then, ambition took hold and... well, he only truly wondered whether or not Somnus believed his own version. Still, he'd exposed enough heartstrings that Hades knew where to pull. "An understandable reaction, Your Majesty. Duty demands much of those who swear by her. Bitterness is easier to swallow than sorrow, as bitterness can grant strength. For when does a Founder King have time to grieve and mourn for all those he has left behind? He cannot, for it falls to him to lead those who walk after, and if he looks back, then he, and all those that follow, are lost. He must accept, bury his heart, and persevere. Such is his sacrifice."
Yes, Somnus wasn't an ambitious git who wanted the throne, he was merely a poor soul, forced into the role of savior by cruel Fate. What had happened with his family was merely a tragedy, and Somnus only acted out of duty, truly if it could have been any other way, Somnus would have done so! Surely that was the case, right? What Somnus had to do was not ambition in action, it was a valiant sacrifice! Pfah. Still, this was enlightening; the way he spoke of later generations, he was pulled from another time, speaking as if he was not a witness, which likely meant he wasn't immortal. But his brother, well, that was a fascinating topic. "Is your brother here in this world?" He asked plainly. it was more of a matter of curiosity, but really, he supposed it could be argued that there was some manner of public safety to it.
Somnus hadn’t bothered to censor himself much when talking about his family. Perhaps he should have, but it didn’t seem to matter as much when he was away from Lucis. There was no one to judge him for it or work to pull him down from his throne. Well, perhaps this Galvus would silently judge him, but what did that matter? He was paying the man for this visit, wasn’t he? Money bought loyalty more than anything else did. Anyway, it was probably best to be honest for something like this, though he was still slightly skeptical to see what soulmate the man would come up with for him.
If his answers bothered Galvus at all though, he didn’t show it in either his responses or facial expressions. On the contrary, Somnus was actually rather pleased by what the red-haired man did say. “You have a way with seeing directly to the heart of things.” It was the closest to a compliment that Somnus was likely to give him. Truthfully, he rather liked the odd red-haired man in this disreputable but cozy shop. It made him wonder what the man had done for a living back on his world. Matchmaker seemed an odd profession for a man to have, but perhaps his home had been more like Sonora than Lucis was.
Galvus seemed to take an interest in Ardyn, and Somnus narrowed his eyes slightly as he considered his question. Truthfully it was something he didn’t like remembering even though the answer had been confirmed for him at every turn. “Yes.” The word was biting and reluctant, but there was no reason to hide it. It might even keep the man alive. “I’ve heard as much, though I don’t recommend meeting him. Unless you’d like to catch that plague going around Provo.” He waved a hand in irritation as he spoke. “He’s probably the cause. He’s more starscourge than man at this point.”
A deep part of Somnus was a little afraid of what would happen if Ardyn found him now, but he squashed that before it could even become a fully formed thought. Somnus had bested him before--even with the monster that his brother had become. Surely he’d have no problems doing it again.
“What is it that you did back in your world?” Somnus asked suspiciously, giving voice to his earlier thoughts on Galvus. He was well-spoken and polite, but there was something in his interest towards Ardyn that he didn’t quite like, even if perhaps it was natural to be curious of monsters.
