The morning i was born again i was made into a beast
The night air was cold, a stinging cold as to pester away those to weak to be on the mount. This high up the snow flurried and threatened to consume all in its swirling darkness as the moon hid behind the storm clouds. It was silent save for the wind whispering as if the souls who once inhabited these ruins were whispering of the stranger among them. For even as most of the creatures had hidden away in their caves and crevices, Ultimecia walked the mountain path unperturbed by all the goings on around her.
Even the arctic weather could not chill the heat of her blood as she continued her march up the mountain. How very strange and unusual this dimension was and what she knew was some of her power had been dimmed, sullied after time had compressed only to be unraveled and set straight again. Cursed SeeD and their interference. The fact that he still drew breath filled her with hate almost equal to that she held for all mankind. Now was not the time to give into blind rage, it was time to plan and find the answers that had eluded her thus far.
The blurry shadows began to take form as she came upon the ruins of a town. On the outskirts, Most of the buildings had cracked and decayed as the icy elements took roost with some homes filled with nothing but snow and rock. The buildings that remained intact lay quiet, their darkened windows watching her like demons ready to strike. She was ready to strike back.
If she were to plan, she needed a base of operations far from the sullied ugly masses. Even if the boy had his desert lair, she would not allow stoop to taking it as her own. She would find him when she wished and had no need to see him or for him to come to her unless she beckoned. When the time came, she would once more build her castle above the planes for all to see and tremble in its majesty. For now she needed solitude and discretion.
The road lead to a town square with branching paths although Ultimecia only eyed the path toward the manor ahead hidden behind rusted gates. She didn't so much as blink when the screech came from above and a dark sphere began its descent towards her. The ahriman had but begun to come into view when Ultimecia snapped her talons. "Stop." The beast froze unnaturally even in the frozen wasteland as Ultimecia walked up the beast. It was over as quickly as it began. Her fist shrouded in dark magic struck through the beast's overlarge eye before ripping back out. Ultimecia snappe her finger again to let the monster feel its last agonizing moments before it feel silent, the wind once again the only noise about.
She once more made her way to the manor to survey it and see if it proved suitable for her needs.
Yuna had been prepared for the perils of the Headstone Forest on her solitary quest to return to the Crystallus Divider. However, as she skidded her way down yet another mountain path, she desperately wished that she had known what would come after the forest. She would have been sure to pack warmer clothing. As it was, she was forced to walk with a blanket wrapped around her and her bag slung over one shoulder, her staff held in front of her as if it could shield her from the wind.
“Shell,” she murmured, letting out a breath of relief as the magical barrier offered her some protection from the elements. It wasn’t ideal, but she no longer felt as if she were freezing solid above the waist. Her skirt was at least long enough to protect her legs, so as long as she kept up a steady stream of magic to protect herself, she felt as if she could make it long enough to clear the mountain.
The snowy trails gave her a strong sense of déjà vu, and as much as she wanted to deny it, she could guess the reason why. Mount Gagazet was said to stretch even higher than these peaks, and while Yuna still couldn’t consciously remember passing through the holy site, Declan’s words refused to leave her.
“You’re the reason that we have the eternal calm, Lady Yuna.”
Yuna pulled the blanket tighter around herself, but for once, she didn’t think it had anything to do with the cold.
The terrain that she was walking on slowly leveled out over the next few hours, and eventually, Yuna found herself at the base of a silent, deserted city. While she had previously been in a hurry to get off the mountain as soon as possible, the sight of the crumbled buildings stunned her enough that she took it slow as she continued forward. The snow blanketed everything so thoroughly that the ruins felt quieter than they actually were, and it made her a little sad to think about how long it must have been since someone had tread here. Zephon must have forgotten about the people who had lived here long ago. It was a depressing piece of ancient history.
After a moment, Yuna paused, considering the fresh footprints in the snow in front of her with some amount of bewilderment. It looked as if she wasn’t alone on this mountain after all, but what she saw made no sense. The shape imprinted into the snow was mostly human, and yet the front was curved and indented as if it had actually been left by something with sharp talons. Yuna hesitated, knowing that she should continue on without investigating something that could be dangerous, but her curiosity got the better of her, and she ended up following the mysterious footprints to where they curved up to the manor house that stood over all the other ruins.
As Yuna rounded the corner, she was met with the sight of a tall woman who was facing away from her as she gazed up at the rusted gate that surrounded the house. Her white hair was unbelievably long, and something seemed wrong with how little she was wearing in the freezing air, but Yuna was too pleased to see another human to care. As she started to approach, a dark shadow fell over the woman, and Yuna froze when she finally noticed the fiend that was diving down towards her.
Dropping both her bag and her blanket where she stood, Yuna ran forward in an attempt to help the woman, throwing out her staff as she went “Hol-!“
Yuna didn’t know what had happened. She felt like she had blinked, but the monstrous bird was suddenly nowhere to be seen in the sky. It was too late to stop her spell though, so she finished with “-ly!” before pearls of holy magic exploded harmlessly in the air where the monster had been a moment before.
Yuna skidded to a stop directly in front of the woman, wincing as she realized that the creature had somehow already collapsed to the ground, twitching in agony. Even if it had nearly attacked a human, she didn’t like to see anything suffer, but it died before she could do anything to put the poor thing out of its misery. Letting out a slightly shaky breath, Yuna turned away before looking up at the person who clearly hadn’t needed her help. This close, she could see that even more was off about the woman. Her eyes were yellow, and her hands and feet were curved into claws like a fiend’s would be, but Yuna forced herself to push down her unease. This stranger didn’t deserve her unkindness based on how she looked. Yuna intended to treat her like anyone else.
After a moment, she had collected herself enough to give the woman a polite smile before dipping into a bow. “I’m Yuna. I’m so sorry to barge in. I saw you being attacked, but…clearly you didn’t need help.” Straightening up, she looked into the stranger’s yellow eyes curiously. “You must be a very talented mage. I didn’t even see your attack.”
The morning i was born again i was made into a beast
The night began to hum once again as the Ahriman lay at her paws in the blood drenched snow. Ultimecia stared through what had once been the things eyes as she closed her eyes and waited or a moment. Was this just an off chance encounter by a lowly beast looking for an easy target, or perhaps it was the first of a wave to come. Were the other impotent creature hiding in the shadows that could not math her darkness even in the deadest of night? No matter. The wind whispered of no more life as she opened her eyes again looking up into the night sky, the cloud obscuring any pinpricks of light that might have dared to penetrate through.
Yet light shone above her as she paced toward the manor. She watched it as it dissipated and the holy aura ebbed its essence through the air around them. The witch tensed. What advanced magic! The energy of the spell made it clear it was pure and the watered down humanized and disgusting para-magic of those lesser beings. A dark orb sprung to her hand as she turned her eyes glinting even without a refraction of light as she prepared to snub whatever creature had happened. Her knight could not have turned so fast could he?
No monster came forth just the visage of a girl which caused her eyes to narrow and her lips to purse. Could it be possible? She had wondered as such since arriving here. A cold cruel smile replaced her smirk as the woman ran up announcing herself and bowing and Ultimecia waved the dark magic from her hand for the time being.
"A name is such a powerful thing," she responded as the girl pulled herself her bow. Ultimecia bore down into the girls blue and green eyes her own yellowed ones unblinking with curiosity and malice as she began to circle the young one. "A fool would brandish it without warning letting any who would misuse it free reign." Ultimecia came full circle her talons rising to her smile before pointing at the girl. "Or perhaps it's a warning whispered among the fearful, a death knell for those that you would come across?" If the girl was a witch then she should know full way the taint her name would carry, if not she was lowly life to be snuffed or subjugated.
Ultimecia began her circling once more flickering in and out of sight sporadically appearing around the girl as she continued speaking her voice seeming to come from the point she left and not where she was. "What type of witch allows herself to be lost among the folds of time along with some common beast?" Ultimecia taunted as she stopped her illusions turning her back to the girl staring up to the manor house once more. "Past, present, future. Where do your eyes gaze? What would you do in any of them? Even if you're frozen in this place, time will ever march on. Do you wonder what lies at its end?" She began towards the manor once more casting the doors open with a wave of her claw with a resonating bang in the cold quiet night as she walked cross the threshold.
She's trying so hard to hold a normal conversation with her.
I will live with my sorrow
As Yuna rose from the polite bow that she’d done as an introduction, she was taken aback to see the dark orb of magic at the woman’s fingertips, though she almost immediately banished it. Perhaps she’d just startled the stranger by appearing so suddenly? Yuna wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt, particularly since she had let go of the magic before attacking her, so she gave the woman a tentative smile. That smile faltered as the woman’s yellow-eyed stare seemed to bore into her before she began to slowly circle Yuna.
Yuna’s fingers clenched a little tighter on her staff as she carefully turned her head to watch the woman’s progress, frowning when she admonished her for giving out her name so easily. “I see…” If names had power where the inhuman woman was from, then Yuna supposed that she should appreciate the advice. She tried to read the situation that way at least, rather than taking offense at the clear insult. “Consider it a gift then. To commemorate our meeting.” The yellow-eyed woman did not give her own name, and Yuna supposed that it would be rude to ask for it after what she had just said, but she couldn’t resist a compromise. She liked to know how to refer to people. “What should I call you then?”
The woman phased out of view, and Yuna took a step back as she started to reappear at different intervals around her, speaking in a mocking tone about how she couldn’t keep up. The word ‘witch’ wasn’t something that Yuna particularly wanted to be called, but the meaning behind it was clear at least. Still, the woman’s disappearing act was far more concerning than her word choice. Biting at her bottom lip, Yuna held a clenched fist near her chest as she wondered if this meant that the woman was an unsent. Did she look so strange because time had turned her into a fiend? Or was she still alive and just using a form of magic that Yuna hadn’t seen before?
Before she could parcel out the answer, the woman came to a stop, facing away from Yuna as she looked up at the ruined mansion, as if she were no longer interesting enough to hold her attention. Letting out a breath, Yuna relaxed her stance, reasoning that the woman hadn’t attacked her like she had expected. Maybe she really was just trying to give Yuna advice, at least in her own way. It reminded her a little of Belgemine—the unsent summoner who had always tried to teach her by pitting their aeons against each other. She had been fairly curt as well whenever Yuna had lost.
“You’re right.” Yuna raised her chin in an attempt to meet the white-haired woman’s gaze. She wouldn’t fail whatever test this was. “I do still have a lot to learn. But to answer your question, that’s why I look to all three. I run to the future to try to make it brighter, but I don’t want to miss a single moment in the present either. It can be gone so quickly.” She paused to cast a slightly sad glance at the ruined village around them. “…And the people and places from the past. I want to remember them if I can. I wouldn’t be what I am without them. All three times have something to teach us.”
“Do you wonder what lies at its end?”
Yuna hesitated—her mind racing again towards the idea of an eternal calm that Declan had fed her—but before she could answer, the woman thrust open the doors to the mansion with one sweep of a talon. In a moment, she was inside the abandoned building, and Yuna was left to wonder if she should follow or not. The woman hadn’t exactly invited her, but she hadn’t told her not to come either. After only a moment of hesitation, she lifted her skirt a bit so it wouldn’t drag on the snow before she stepped after the stranger into the cold shelter.
“…I can imagine it was very pretty here once,” Yuna murmured, turning in a slow circle to take in the dim entrance hall. The grand staircase and the vaulted ceiling were still a sight to behold, even as dusty as they were. Turning her head, she glanced a bit uncertainly at her questionable companion. “Are you just passing through, or did something bring you here?”
The morning i was born again i was made into a beast
Ultimecia gazed on the entrance after passing through the door of the manor. What stood was the memory of luxury abandoned to the whims of fate. The wallpaper was peeled and frozen in sharp edges in the bitter cold. Icicles clung to the chandelier that loomed above her, how easily they could snap off and impale one so unfortunate to be standing there. She glanced at the portraits that lined the walls, all those pathetic creatures most likely already dead staring down at her as in judgment. With a swipe of her hand, they burst from the wall clanging to the floor. They were no longer masters of this place just as they were only slaves to the whims of time.
"All things grow dim and dull with the ravaging of time," she stated not turning to face Yuna as the girl approached her. So she had followed after all. Curiosity was such a useful thing to exploit. Humans so young, so naive to the nature of things, there lives ever too short to satiate the desires and curiosities they were plagued by. Most would jump to be explained that which they could not understand and Ultimecia chuckled quietly to herself. She turned to look at Yuna once more. There were no signs of her magic beginning to transmute her. Either she had just inherited her powers or she had a steadfast knight. Or perhaps she was a witch of a different variety. She wondered how far into the past her mind knew.
"How sentimental," she said with a cock of her head as her wings expanded behind her as she laughed, "to find your strength in the memories of others instead of your own merit. To want to live in the moment instead of controlling it. Light flickers and is extinguished in the darkness of the future as are all things. Humans. Emotions. Hope. Do you think you can defy the ever forward march?" Ultimecia turned her gaze to the portraits she had thrown to the ground before waving her hand bursting them into flames. She watched as they simmered before they were reduced to ash.
"Do you think they will be remembered now?" Ultimecia taunted the girl before ascending the stairs. "I am the power that men fear, yet their most known secret desire. I am she that both inspires and terrorizes their fantasies. Past, present, future; all mine to control," she began answering the question she had been asked earlier in the snow. She raised her arms in a grandiose gesture looking down at Yuna from the top of the stairs. "In a word: Ultimecia." She let an arm fall pointing down the way at Yuna before smiling a smile that did not reach her cold fiery yellowed eyes. "Do you believe yourself to possess such power, witch?" She smirked.
As Yuna crept inside after her, the white-haired mage swept all the portraits on the yellowed walls to the floor. Yuna tensed slightly at the clatter as some of the canvases broke from their frames, and she met the eyes of one man whose painted eyes seemed to stare right through her accusingly. How could you have brought the eternal calm? You can’t save anyone.
The woman continued to taunt her about her views on the past, and Yuna’s fingers clenched tighter on her staff as the self-proclaimed witch set fire to the portraits littered across the floor. The flames greedily consumed the canvas surfaces as they danced across them, and Yuna kept a careful eye on the fire to see if it would spread to the walls as she gave the woman a reproachful look.
“You can call it sentimental, but I find strength in many places outside of myself. In many people outside of myself.” She glanced a little hesitantly at the smoldering, painted faces before continuing. “You’re right. Everyone is forgotten eventually. But the actions they took still cause ripples into the future. These people had lives once. They mattered. And what you’re doing is disrespectful.”
The woman began to ascend the stairs ahead of them as she finally introduced herself, and Yuna held her staff in front of her warily as she looked up at the woman and tried to process everything that she was saying. Every time was hers to control? Yuna didn’t quite understand, but she couldn’t ignore all the warning signs screaming that the woman was dangerous. What was she to do if she was alone with a madwoman at the base of a mountain?
“...Ultimecia,” Yuna echoed the word now that she finally had a name for her, letting out a slightly shaky breath before raising her chin to meet her gaze directly. “No, I hold no power over men,” she said in response to the question. “I’m certain that you’re stronger than I am. But my power is a gift from everyone who’s helped me along in my journey. I won’t waste that or give anyone a reason to belittle it.”
Ultimecia’s eyes glimmered down at her from her place at the top of the foyer, and Yuna felt a little like she had trapped herself in this house with a bird of prey, complete with the talons pointed in her direction. Still, she couldn’t resist one last comment as she waited for the woman’s next move.
“If you can’t see the value in any lives at all, then...many must have failed you, Ultimecia. And I’m sorry for you.”
The morning i was born again i was made into a beast
Ultimecia simply continued to stare as this Yuna tried to demonize her actions. Respect. Good. Bad. All notions of morality washed away by the ebb and flow of time. The girl didn't even deserve a response as Ultimecia waited to see what the girl would do. Did this respect cause her enough anguish to lash out, or would she simply babble on and on with her self-righteousness? With how much she babbled on about those who had helped her and her past, Ultimecia wondered how far back her mind could go. Could she be of any use for Time Compression or was she just a bothersome brat? Either way Ultimecia had a plan for her.
"I see no one beside you, perhaps they have failed you too, witch. Or are they no longer with you because you failed them?" Ultimecia smiled as she spread her arms. With a smile, she snapped her talons and two pillars of flame erupted to the left and right of Yuna far enough that it wouldn't cause her harm. Yet. "Come then," Ultimecia said as she began to float above the stairs, her wings beating in an ominous rhythm, "Show me the power these ghosts of the past have given you. Do you deserve your place in the present or should you too be damned to the nothingness of eternity?"
Ultimecia flickered out of sight as her laughter rung through the quiet foyer. She appeared again near the exit snapping her fingers to have the doors slam tight behind her back. She began to rise again as dark orbs formed round her talons before firing them off in the girls direction before flickering from sight once more. A sorceress who would fall too easily would be of no use to Ultimecia's plans.
“I see no one beside you, perhaps they have failed you too, witch. Or are they no longer with you because you failed them?"
Yuna sucked in a breath, bringing one hand up to touch her chest as she tried not to show how much those comments hit home. Based on Declan’s words, she didn’t think that she had failed Spira, but if that was the case, where were the rest of her guardians? Why was she the only one here?
“I’m not sure,” she admitted quietly. “But I’ll find them again. I’m sure of it.” It might have been their job to guard her, but Yuna would make them proud by showing them that she could stand on her own feet when she had to. She had no intention of just waiting around for them to come to her rescue. She could make her journey alone this time.
Ultimecia snapped her animalistic fingers together, and Yuna tensed in place as pillars of fire appeared to the sides of her. They made no move to close in on her yet, but Yuna could still feel the heat of the flames on her face and bare shoulders as she raised her staff in a defensive stance. Ultimecia made clear her intentions to attack her before she once again flickered out of sight. Yuna cast her eyes around warily for the white-haired woman, whirling around when the doors slammed shut behind her. Yuna had no doubt that they would refuse to open now even if she tried the knobs. She was locked in.
Fear made her legs feel heavy as she took a step back from the flames, but she didn’t have a chance to move far before Ultimecia launched a volley of dark orbs towards her before once again vanishing from view. “Reflect!” She cried out, waving her staff in front of her on instinct just before the magic smashed into her. The force of the spell rocked her backwards, but the blue translucent shield held as the magic was thrown back towards Ultimecia. Yuna didn’t have time to see whether the reversal would hit the woman or not--Summoning Shiva was likely her only chance against a mage this powerful, but years of training screamed at her to give herself space before calling on the aeon. Summoning indoors was only asking to have the house collapse in on both of them. Yuna needed to find a way outside.
Throwing herself to the side, Yuna launched a water spell at the fire before diving right after it. The resulting steam hissed past her and briefly obscured her vision, and while parts of her skin felt singed after a split second of unbearable heat, she thought that she had managed to avoid any serious burns. Hopefully Ultmecia wouldn’t have expected her to go in a direction that she had considered blocked.
Without stopping, Yuna continued her sprint to a nearby window, bracing herself for the impact. “Protect,” she cast on herself just before leaping through. The last-minute spell softened the blow of her body against the glass before it shattered and she fell into a pile of snow. The cold and the harsh landing knocked the breath out of her, and she could feel some loose pieces of glass cutting into her skin as she shakily rolled to her feet.
Still, she was alive and outside, and she began to swirl her staff around her in the beginning of a summoning while she waited for Ultimecia’s next move.
The morning i was born again i was made into a beast
Ultimecia did not stop to see if her attacks landed as she flitted about the room spewing the dark magic at the young witch. Her cold laugh echoed in the maelstrom of magic as she once again reappeared at the top of the stairs waiting to see if the girl would survive the barrage. A burst of blue and Ultimecia hissed as the energy was flung back at her, and a floating feather replaced her visage as the spell wanted to make contact with her. Her sickly yellowed eyes shone through the steam as she watched like a bird of prey as to what the little one was thinking of doing running straight into a fire. The sound of broken glass, and a gust of wind. The little witch was resourceful if nothing else
Ultimecia paced her way to the front door. There was no need to rush. The girl could run and run and run, but Ultimecia would find her. Consume her. Destroy her. The promise of getting away for now when later was ever as imminent. Foolish creatures crawling their way from death as if they could escape time. The manor doors burst open violently as she flicked her wrist and walked out into the snowy courtyard casting her gaze to the girl. Still alive. Still standing. Clinging to hope; a promise of tomorrow. Ultimecia simply scoffed as she watched the girl begin to some sort of ritualistic dance.
"Submit and perhaps your suffering will be ended within time," Ultimecia said gesturing with one hand into the air. "Continue to resist, and you will know no end to the torment in store. Your soul contorted, your mind stretched in every moment from the beginning with no end. All within the world I will design. Eternally damned, witch." She rose her other hand and gave a shrug. The girl did not have a choice. Ultimecia would do with her as she pleased in the end
The cold night became colder still as the girl continued her dance. The calm night began to stir in whirlwind of flurries and hail as a being began to materialize before the girl. Ultimecia could not control the hateful laughter that burst from her as the being corporealized before her. "You would use a Guardian Force against me." Ultimecia's laughter continued to ring through the snow that had begun to fall. Her eyes shone with new malice, something feral awoken in them. "Your power is nothing," she said as she began to float in the air her wings beating hard and strong, "You are nothing. You are no more than a girl hiding behind things stronger than you. I will lay bare the futility of your faith in your own power. You will be lost to the void beyond time, and the meaninglessness of your existence will be complete." The iris of her eyes began to fade away to yellow as she began summoning her strength.
Yuna spun in a quick circle as she swung her staff above her head, feeling a cold wind swirl around her as Shiva’s power started to seep down from the sky. Spinning her staff in her hands, she flinched slightly as the loud crack of the front door bursting open alerted her that Ultimecia had stormed outside. She very nearly faltered in the summoning, but she forced herself to stand tall even as the woman berated her.
Submit? Yuna knew better than to believe that the woman would show her any mercy if she knelt. Perhaps she’d get bored of her and kill her faster, but it wouldn’t spare her life. Yuna refused to surrender to someone like her even as her hands shook with the cold, and she struck the base of her staff against the snow-covered ground as ice exploded out from the point of impact.
It was only her third time summoning Shiva since she had come to Zephon, and as the figure of the aeon shimmered into view in front of her, she was reminded of how different this one looked from the Shiva of Spira. Back home, Shiva had been a beautiful woman with long dreadlocks, revealing clothes, and blue-tinted skin. This Shiva had crystal armor covering its entire body so that its gender was unidentifiable, and light reflected off the surface in a shimmering collection of blues and purples. Still, the different physical appearance didn’t really matter. Shiva had still come to help her for the third time, and Yuna would be eternally grateful for that.
“Please. Lend me your power,” she murmured, before tensing in place as Ultimecia took up a scornful laugh. “Guardian force?” She questioned the word, but she didn’t really expect an answer as the white-haired woman took to the sky above them, throwing mocking words down upon her.
Yuna gripped her staff tighter in answer. “I’m not ashamed to lean on other people when I have to. And whatever you do to me, I know that my life had meaning. That everyone who lived here had meaning.” Ultimecia’s eyes brightened to an even sharper yellow if possible, and Yuna sucked in a breath as the sight reminded her of her encounter with Ardyn in a hospital in Provo. She was in a similar spot of danger now. She didn’t have the power to defeat either of them on her own.
Which meant that there was really only one thing that she could do now.
“Shell,” she murmured, casting a spell around Shiva in an attempt to protect her from the woman’s punishing magic. Leaning in, she lightly laid a hand on the aeon’s arm, wincing at the cold but not pulling away yet. “You’ve already sacrificed yourself once for me. I swear to you that it won’t be in vain.” Stepping back, she let Shiva leap into the air to meet the woman where she hovered before Yuna turned and fled for the manor’s gate.
If there had been anyone there other than an aeon who would regenerate, then Yuna would have stayed, but it was just the two of them. Just like that day with Ardyn, Yuna knew that she would die if she tried to fight her any longer. It was far better to flee now and return later with reinforcements, even if the idea of someone like her running loose in the world was a disheartening one.
Reaching the gate, Yuna retrieved her bag and cloak from where she had dropped them in the snow before trying to help Ultimecia against the fiend. How foolish she had been. Throwing her bag over her shoulder, she pulled the cloak tightly around herself, trying to block out the cold as she ran down the mountain path. Caius and Celes needed to hear about this.
