Mateus felt his shoulders relax as the conversation passed off back to Genesis. The comment the man made was met with a cold hard stare even as Mateus would raise his glass in return a plastered smile rising to the occasion. He indulged himself keeping his tongue still by finishing his glass slowly without break. He didn't understand why the statement had gotten under his skin so, but it didn't stop the flickering of ways to stop a person from speaking: a mouth sewn shut or a foot placed firmly on someone's neck. Mateus shook his head pretending it was his extended sip that caused the reaction. He was about to bade the servant over, but he heard wine hitting glass before he had even had time to move a finger
Mateus closed his eyes in an effort to not roll them as Genesis announced "the gift of the goddess" as his want from the city. Could he not find his own words to describe his ambitions, or perhaps he rather them try to guess at his intentions. Mateus was far too busy questioning his own wants to be bothered trying to solve a stranger's riddle. "You already told that you'd cast of the chains of being a soldier," Mateus said wondering aloud as Genesis and X had finished speaking of all the he wished for, "What else would you like to change with this turn of events?" Did he wish to be the one to wield power now instead of being told what to do? He wouldn't ask outright, but Mateus took interest interest in the still vague answer the man gave.
"Agreed," he nodded as Genesis acknowledged he hated to be bored. "As for you entertainment, it has been adequate enough to keep my curiosity aroused for now." Mateus drank once more to buy himself some time to come up with a wish from the city as she quietly oh ed at his statement. He leaned back into his chair drumming his fingers on the table not letting his gaze slip from the sockets of X's mask. "Aside from the promise I made, I don't think there's anything I want from this city." X tilted her head as Mateus continued, "Why this city? What makes it any different than the others I've seen roaming this land. What would I want from those cities? I think the question need reversed. What are you implying this city has to offer and at what price?"
It was quiet for a moment as he and X stared at each other. Yes, she may have this cute little operation, but he had run an empire. Perhaps he had used more sheer force to install his will and rule, but he knew a negotiation when he saw one. X than pressed her hand to mouth as she gave a forced laugh. "Oh, and I had hoped we would have gotten through dinner before we discussed such things." X clapped and the servant sat down the bottle of wine between the three of them before quickly exiting the room.
"To be a leader or figurehead draws the ire of the crowd. Does it not. But how sweet the feeling of it none the less right?" she addressed Mateus before turning to Genesis. "You might find that we act more as whispering voices to those who might be able to bring about the change we desire. Eyes and ears are drawn to such exotic beauty and distinction as you gentlemen and your influence as spectacles and influence the masses or the elite would be in exchange for your weight in luxury. Not a bad a trade off I'd say."
X smiled once more letting the Mateus sit there waiting for the catch of it all. Who were they exactly and what did they want? A secret society was not something unheard of, but what was with the ornateness and hierarchy of it all? He'd keep quiet until she decided to open up more as he took another swig of his wine. It was always the person who spoke first that usually lost the battle.
Mateus goaded him to answer further what he wanted changed by pointing out that he’d already left Shinra. Genesis scowled faintly into his glass of wine, wondering how to answer that. Certainly, Shinra was irrelevant here, but that didn’t change the facts or the people he had met here. Sephiroth was still struggling to accept himself and was liable to lose it when his memories returned. Vivi had been nice enough for a kid, but he had clearly been some kind of experiment. Even Kuja, however enjoyable their night had been, had clearly just been trying to lose himself in something to dull the pain. It seemed like everyone who had come to Zephon from another place was just getting by, and no one was doing anything about it.
“It’s better here, but it’s not really any different at its core,” he said, voicing what had been nagging at him since his arrival. “And for how many people appear here from other places, the leadership in Zephon seems to be supremely lacking if they don’t have a plan in place for that. That’s just asking people to steal or be forced to claw their way up from the bottom.” Hence him and Sephiroth being forced to squat in Zack’s tiny apartment, despite how humiliating that was. He had a feeling that Mateus could relate. His extravagant clothes showed that he was probably fairly well-off now, but it was still a let-down from being an emperor if his earlier expression during the topic was anything to go by.
When it came Mateus’ turn to answer, he was quick to challenge X by saying that there was nothing in particular that he wanted from Torensten and that it was her task to show him there was something here to offer. Genesis repressed the urge to laugh at how blunt that was, but it seemed to be effective as X clapped her hands and the servant boy quickly left the room. Genesis frowned slightly, watching him walk away until the click of the double doors signified that the three of them were alone in the extravagant dining room.
X began by implying that she would like their aid because they stood out and would have a fair amount of influence, and that in exchange, they would be surrounded by the same luxury that they’d experienced tonight. She seemed to be trying to appeal to each of them individually—she reminded Mateus of how it felt to be a figurehead and informed Genesis that they were often able to whisper in the ears of the elite to create change. Genesis frowned at the last part, trying to weigh what she meant. He’d be able to affect change here if he joined them?
Neither Mateus or X appeared to be in a hurry to speak after that, and after a few seconds of silence, Genesis lost his patience. Setting down his empty wine glass with a loud clink, he eyed her carefully. “I take it that you’re asking us to join you? And what are you exactly?” He gestured towards her dragon mask that was starting to seem normal, despite how jarring they had been at first. “And what would we do here in exchange for your offer? You said that you wanted us for our influence?”
Appearance-wise, he could see why they were chosen. Mateus was a breath-taking sight, and he’d be an invaluable ally to their group with his leadership experience. As for Genesis, he supposed that his wing and red theme made him memorable, but X would be disappointed if she assumed that he came from the same cloth as the ex-emperor. His wing didn’t come to him from any high-class breeding or angelic ancestry. He was just a common failed experiment, nothing more. He was positive that she wouldn’t want him as much if she knew that, and he started pouring himself another glass of wine with slightly more force than necessary. “My soul, corrupted by vengeance, hath endured torment to find the end of the journey in my own salvation and your eternal slumber,” he quoted softly as he poured.
The all seeing eye is watching tonight nothing to hide. secrets in sight.
Mateus was more than willing to play this silent game of attrition. To speak would only allow the others' answers to control the conversation at that point. Mateus sipped his wine as he looked between X, who he wish he could look in the eye at the point, and Genesis and soft but forced smile to each of them behind his glass. Did she really expect him to join her with no more information. Like he was a dog lapping up any scraps of power that she would leave for him. He would have laughed if he were entirely sure of what hidden agenda she had. If he wanted power, he would find a way to procure it without the help. Still, he had nothing better to do this evening than play along and glean some information from the situation. Thankfully, his other seemed less patient with this silent game and started questioning her
Mateus smiled thankful that he had not been the one to break the silence. "Indeed," he interjected finishing his glass before sitting it down to place his chin on his folded hands. Mateus smiled as he asked tilting his head slightly as to act genuinely intrigued, "the facade of a dragon. It hides your identity, but does it also mask the heart of a dragon as well?" He poured more wine and kept the glass close to his lips as he smirked. Mateus was just as interested in the reason for the mask as could be expected, probably more so than why they had targeted him out. He had wanted to be seen and thus had been. There was no more to it he thought. He say back in his chair as X began to speak.
"Were either of you here before the dragon's gate was wrenched open?"she asked turning her gaze from Mateus to Genesis and back. "We were quite upset than an outsider had found a way to break it open before us, but now," she grinned and something in it made even Mateus take pause for a second. If he hadn't known better, he would have sworn the eyes of the mask had flared for a moment before she continued, "we find it fortuitous that we can blame further tampering on outsiders, and its opening has ushered in more believers."
X stood and Mateus almost felt compelled to do the same, but she began speaking again quickly and he assumed this had been for dramatics. "Yes, the dragons did come at the gate's opening, but not all of them. What do you know of the legends of this land? Of Bahamut the Recreator?" She didn't give enough time for a response before continuing. "A dragon in some legends said to kill and rebirth the world when it needed the most. In other myths, a great power that helps those who follow his orders the chance to become what they are truly meant to become." Mateus side eyed Genesis as the woman's exhiliration began to grow with each passing sentence
"We the Children of Bahamut have been searching for so long for a way to bring him forth,"she said sitting back down. "Dragons were once thought to be mere myths and legends, but lo behold. This has certainly swayed even the most skeptical to change their views. Elites fund our private research in hopes they will obtain his blessing now too. We need figureheads the likes of you to start spreading the concept to the masses." X smiled before filling her own wine glass and partaking. It seemed she was done for now.
It took all Matues had for him not to laugh in her face. A fanatic group chasing about some child's fairy tales, and they wanted him to help. He couldn't deny the frivolous and pretentiousness of the whole grand affair lent credibility that nobles had fallen for this rouse. Yet.... hadn't he been blessed already by something far above the realm of mortality already atop the tower? Mateus paused and drank his wine. "How intriguing," was all he let out as he sat and thought over her words. Could this woman be believed, and why could she not be the one to spread the word herself? There was much to consider and the amount of wine he had was making the decision oh so very hard to grasp.
As Genesis sipped his fresh glass of red wine, Mateus echoed his sentiment that he wanted to know more about the group they were being offered to join. Genesis smiled at him more genuinely over the rim of his glass as the man wondered poetically whether or not her golden mask also hid the heart of a dragon. What a fascinating bit of musing. The ex-emperor was a bit on the surly side, but there was no denying that he was elegant and beautiful with a penchant for the arts. Genesis found that he wouldn’t mind seeing him again after this if their paths crossed in the city again. They were both staying with a friend in Torensten after all, and both being granted the same offer to join this underground group.
Seeming to acknowledge that they both wanted answers, X finally began her story with a question. “Were either of you here before the dragon's gate was wrenched open?”
Genesis quirked an eyebrow, glancing at Mateus to see if he had any ideas of what she was talking about. “I’m going to go out on a limb and say that I wasn’t,” he said with a wave of his hand. She spoke about it like an event that everyone should know about, so he assumed that he would have heard about it even if he hadn’t been in Torensten at the time.
X continued only after standing up, her passion and excitement flowing through into her voice as she asked if either of them had ever heard of Bahamut. Genesis blinked slowly at her, and he was about to ask what the rare summon had to do with anything, but she was already off on a rant about this world’s myths and legends. He could respect that level of obsession, so he quietly let her finish, growing more and more positive that she couldn’t be speaking about the same Bahamut that he knew.
“I’m not sure that summoning him is as exciting as you imagine,” he said as he stood up himself. “I managed to find the materia to call him in my own world, and he was powerful certainly, but it was nothing world-shattering.” Unfortunately. Bahamut hadn’t even managed to take down Zack, though he’d at least served as a nice distraction for the first-class Soldier. “I suppose yours may be a different version though,” he admitted, flopping back down into his seat as he considered her offer. “To spread the gospel of Bahamut then? That’s what you want from us?”
Unless there was a catch, it really wasn’t a bad offer, all things considered. Sure, it involved going along with something that bordered on insanity, but Genesis was no stranger to relying on a goddess for aid or to telling anyone he came across about her words. He was more passionate about what he actually believed in certainly, but he had no problem with broaching the topic of Bahamut with strangers if he received wealth in return. It wasn’t as if he and Sephiroth were supporting themselves right now. They were mooching off of Zack and crammed into a tiny apartment all together, as if that wasn’t humiliating enough.
And as for Bahamut…Well, if this group actually managed to call him, then Genesis did have to admit that he missed calling on summons in battle. He could rely on his own swordskills and the materia that he’d brought with him, but summon materia had been a large part of his fighting style back on Gaia. Assuming that this group wasn’t just a fringe group with insane members, then Genesis would be interested in getting a piece of that power. If X was competent enough to finish her work, that was.
“I see. My friend, your desire is the bringer of life, the gift of the goddess,” Genesis said with a slow smile towards her as he rested his chin on his crossed fingers. “Color me interested.”
The all seeing eye is watching tonight nothing to hide. secrets in sight.
Mateus only smiled as Genesis seemed all too excited at the idea of joining ranks with X as he rose and spouted. He smirked as he sipped at his wine staring at the red jacket and wing. How like a soldier to fall in line so easily at the promise of anything worthwhile. Still there was that certain something about his attitude and draw to the dramatics of everything that had Mateus not dismiss him outright. He wondered if he was as melodramatic in more intimate settings and how he was in more public ones. An enigma for sure.
Still there was the matter of the proposal at hand. Mateus didn't say anything at first instead feeling the electricity in the air and the fire of passion that sang in both the wine in his blood and the words of X. The Dragon's Gate. The words felt familiar, but he couldn't say that he knew them too well. It felt like a muddied whisper of a secret said in the dark of night as he thought on it some more. Perhaps it had been mentioned by one someone or another on his travels, but it felt more urgent more visceral than that. If only he could think more clearly.
"Yes, your prospect is most interesting," Mateus said standing for the first time with his two accomplices in this meal. He smiled and bowed graciously as looked X dead in the slits where her eyes should be, "Be it far from me to sway you from your recruitment tactics. I've truly enjoyed such an......interesting evening." Matue let the last words hang in there neither positive or negative as he finished off his glass. "Now then, the idea of joining, well I think you can hardly deride me for wanting to think of this on a sound mind." Mateus had used this same ploy before he would not be fooled by this game she had sought to build even if he were slightly interested in playing. "I think I'd make a a far better decision when the cloud of mirth fades." He then turned to Genesis and gave a mischeiovious wink, "Until our paths cross again."
X smiled even though it seemed forced. "Why certainly, you may leave at any point just let those who wait beyond the door you wish to depart and they'll take you back to your residence post haste although there are many pleasures stil; left untasted in the manor" the words felt harsh and rough but quite diplomatic at the same time. Mateus bowed with thanks and made his leave. For Genesis, he let the servant escorting him home to let the auburn haired man his location if he was so interested in further discussion. Mateus hit the bed hard and his dreams were confuted and as much as mess as he was as he squirmed around.
