The heavens turned into an angry scarlet color as the clouds parted and a large black mass began to fall into the atmosphere. The sun seemed to be a pinpoint behind the stirred up clouds, only raining flaming apocalyptic light over the iron and steel city. The city creaked as the buildings began to bend under the pressure. Citizens were screaming in terror at the chaos. Reeve’s gathered volunteers were trying to direct Midgar’s denizens either below the lower plates or out of the city to prevent them from being crushed. Tseng had also phoned old friends to come help with the evacuation.
As Cissnei stood there and watched her beautiful city begin its descent into madness, she knew she could never have turned down Tseng’s plight. She was loyal to not only him, but Rufus ShinRa as well for saving her life when his father reigned. But it was not just loyalty that brought her here. She loved Midgar with all her heart. It was where she was born and raised. When she was with the ShinRa company, she protected the city in earnest. Now she would do what she could to protect the people. With the help of old allies, she directed people to outside the city limits and to emergency vehicles waiting to take them to safety…Even if it was a false sense of safety.
She began combing the streets with the others when it happened. The Lifestream began to ooze up through the cracks in the ground and the grates. The cries were loud enough from below the plates as she realized that the Lifestream was possibly crushing people in order to rise up and stop the Meteor’s threat against Gaia. But the beautiful green glow of the mako energy surged through the streets and in tendrils it rose. Cissnei could not escape it and soon she became engulfed by it. A strange sense of peace befell her, instead of the panic that should have taken over her.
For a moment, she saw Minerva’s serene countenance. Cissnei could not read the expression in Minerva’s neutral face. Everything went black.

“Eugh,” She murmured. She sat up on the wet ground, pulling a sticky leaf off her cheek. She shook her head to try to remove the fog from it. However, the darkness here felt overbearing. Bits of the silver moonlight filtered down to the forest floor. Cissnei climbed to her feet and dug her heels into the ground. She felt the hair raise on her neck and goosebumps on her arm. Every shadow and bush seemed to have eyes staring at her. She learned to trust her instincts over the years, and it was telling her these woods were not safe.
But where does one go from here? This place was not familiar to her. Nor was how she got here.
She could hear the distant screaming of panicked masses. Or was that just the wind?
She shivered and reflexively pulled out her cell phone. Why did she do that? Maybe to call for help? But it was no good. There was no signal. And the people in the call list…who were they? They felt like distant memories. Reno, Rude, Tseng…. she got a brotherly feeling from them. And Veld…the name made her feel like she now had a hole in her heart. As if this man was very dear to her. Why could she not remember? These people must have been important to her.
For a moment, she looked up as she thought about it. She saw some ghostly figures standing among the trees. They wore dark suits and each had a different feel about them. But Cissnei realized they wore the same suit she currently wore. Cissnei mustered up her courage to not be spooked by them. “Who are you?” But they only stared. Were they just a play of her imagination? Just some weird twist of light and shadow?
The young blonde waved to the red head. People didn't usually come out to this forest from what she had seen, not unless they had a job or something to do. She could be mistaken but despite her attire she... Didn't exactly seem like she intended to be here. Was she a natural resident? Or someone like her placed in the world from her own? She seemed... Confused. Like she was looking at something that wasn't there, heck the whole reason Krile responded was because when the redhead did speak up she had assumed she was talking to her but... That didn't seem to be the case. It confused her. She heard the forest made people seen things... That it messed with their minds but... That couldn't be true right? Granted she was no stranger to trees trying to to mess with people these don't seem like Exdeath or his kin. They were just... Trees right? She looked around for a moment as if it it would confirm her thoughts.
Yeah... They had to be.
Krile looked her over, maybe she had fallen, and the impact was making her see things? In truth while she was genually worried about the older girls well heing she also wanted to convince herself she wasn't once again in a crazy magical forest. That didn't go so well the last couple times. But she was certain it wasn't! Rumors were one thing but she for one had never run into such illusions or mind tricks. So... Surely it couldn't be an actual thing right? If it was shed have run into them herself! Yep, it was clearly a concidence. The woman was clealry just....rocked from ether her arrival or falling in these woods or... Something.
Oh right! But she needed to check on her. Out of the four current crystal bearers she was probably the most proficent in magic. Not because the others couldn't use it, but simply due to her main focus being the magic based classes her crystal gifted her. Course that had the side effect of her not being nearly as effective as her friends when it came to more physically inclined feats. But she could do a lot of magic as a result! So if something was wrong with her... Krile might be able to help! She could take time off from her errand for that, Faris wouldn't mind her being gone a bunch longer right? This was one of their jobs after all, helping people, helping each other.
So she reached out a hand and smiled brightly, even if something was wrong she was certain dhe could do something to help.
"Miss? Are you ok? If your hurt I can help! I know a thing or two about magic... I can close and heal wounds and the like so... Oh"
She blinked, in her concern and over worrying about trees she had forgotten to well...
"Ah i didnt ask your name, do you have one miss? Otherwise... I'll just be calling you miss all day.... That might get annoying, probably, I'm Krile!"
Lilac eyes flashed from side to side, carefully inspecting the surrounding area for traps or an ambush. A twig cracked ahead and Seven tensed, crouching into a combat ready stance while bringing her free hand up to form a fist over her shoulder, a signal for those behind her to stop. Seconds stretched into minutes as she listened intently for a followup, but there was none. And she couldn't sense any phantoma either. Her hand slowly lowered back to her side as she glanced back over her shoulder... and frowned. Noone was there.
Habits developed over a lifetime were hard to break. She was used to being one of the leaders in Class Zero. She was used to having her family at her side. But they were gone now. The pack in her other hand suddenly seemed to double in weight as she absentmindedly adjusted it. She'd delved into the Headstone Forest to take on a fiend extermination mission, but she took far more supplies than she needed. Some of her family, like Eight and Cater, were forgetful- always neglecting to bring a sleeping bag or food for their expeditions. She always made a point to pack extra for them when they inevitably forgot. But now the overfilled satchel of supplies just weighed down her heart along with her body.
She shook her head to clear her thoughts and stave off the depression for another few minutes at least as she continued marching forward. "You're a soldier. Act like it." The words were hissed under her breath. She needed to focus. Letting herself get overwhelmed by emotion was how you got killed. She was here to kill monsters, not cry about her lost family. Thankfully, there was cause to distract her. Her head snapped up to the path ahead. "Phantoma... two of them. Human." Phantoma consisted of being's life energy- their soul. Members of Class Zero could detect and extract phantoma from foes they kill, but even without extraction she could tell whether it belonged to a human, a monster, or a servant of the Void. But that was about all she could tell. They weren't moving much, so it didn't seem like they were fighting. Seven tightened her grip on the bag and headed forward towards the clearing ahead.
The sight before her once she finally broke free of the foliage was something of a surprise. A woman and a little girl? They didn't seem related on first glance, which raised more questions. They didn't seem armed or armored either. Given they were in a forest infested with monsters... that wasn't good. It wasn't good at all. Apparently she arrived just as the pair were ending introductions, so all she could do was raise her voice to be heard by them both while she continued to approach. "Hey! What are you two doing here? It's not safe in these woods for civilians." She internally winced at the word. Wasn't she technically a civilian now too? The girl held no authority here, which might be something she'd have to get used to... still. "If you don't have any business here, you should leave at once."
She continued to stare at the black suits until she heard the soft approach of another. Her hand lowered to her hip, where her shuriken still hung off her belt. The red head relaxed at the young, polite voice. Her ochre eyes drifted in the direction of the young blonde for only a moment, before looking back at what had originally caught her attention. But the black suits were already gone. The hair raised on the back of her neck. Ghosts? No…just her mind playing tricks on her. She must have hit her head hard to not remember why she was here or where she was.
Cissnei raised a palm to a temple to give her head a confused rub. “Uh…hello.” She turned back to the young girl and took the girl’s extended hand to give it a firm, business-like shake. “It is a pleasure to meet you, Krile. My name is Cissnei. I feel a little bruised and shaken, but I can walk that off…” Cissnei studied Krile for a moment, “This does not seem to be a place for someone your age. Are you delivering goodies to your grandmother?” Cissnei joked, grinning at her Little Red Riding Hood reference.
However, Cissnei stood to full height and looked over her shoulder at the other newcomer that seemed to be giving demands. “I’m not a…” Cissnei paused midsentence. Was she a civilian here? In her bones, she felt like she had protected civilians in the past. It felt odd to be called one. She gave a slight huff and turned to face Seven. A hand came to rest on her hip as she showed she would not be cowed by Seven’s rough words. Cissnei reintroduced herself, “My name is Cissnei and this young lady here is Krile. I would love to leave, but unfortunately, I have no frame of reference of where I am. I do not recognize these woods.” It was a rare instance when Cissnei was left unprepared without a map.
Cissnei studied this more militaristic woman. “Perhaps we can help each other. You seem to have a goal with all those supplies. I have field experience and can help you carry some of those supplies. If you are here to fight whatever is in these woods, I can help with that too. In exchange, I ask for directions to the nearest settlement.” She looked between the two ladies, before continuing, “If the woods are dangerous, as you both suggest, perhaps it would be better to travel as a group?”
The greetings went over well, Krile was happy for that. But Cissinei seemed to be being a tiny bit stubborn about her injuries. It reminded her of Faris really. Well in a different sense, being a stranger she likely thought she was just some helpful kid, as she said off to deliver a package to a family member. Well she couldn't blame her for that but she'd just show her that wasn't the case! Looking her over, her wounds didn't seem to rough. A simple Cure spell should be enough to patch her up and get her going. She pulled her rod from he back and shook her head, giggling a little in the process.
"No, I'm just helping a friend with some errands, don't worry I'm a big girl, I can defend myself, watch I have lots of tricks up my sleeve, Cure!"
With the spell called out a warm green light would envelop Cissinei, it's healing effects taking place right after and healing up the small wounds she had suffered rather quickly. Krile then leaned forward oncd the light faded to look her over, looking to make sure she had chosen a potent enough spell for the job.
"Does that feel any better? No point in walking it off if we can heal it right up! Like I said, I can use magic!"
Before she could continue her own words she was Interuped by another older newcomer. Wearing some kind of class uniform, or at least that's ths closest compassion she could think of, it didn't really stir up anything but thoughts of the scholerly type. Though she didn't seem to really have the personality to match. Krile huffed at her declaration, who did she think she was just coming out of nowhere and making demands? She wasn't one of the town's security or anything going off her apprence, so where did she get off? It was one thing to ask because you were worried about the kid-her in the room. She was used to that outside her friend, but it was quite another to come in all bossy like this. Kirle put a hand on her still developing hips and stared the girl down with an irritated. expression before responding.
"I do have buisness here actually! Both with Cissinei here and helping my friend with some private stuff, so yeah! You don't have to be so bossy miss, I can handle myself!"
She then leaned back and listened to Cissinei beside her. She would nod her agreement with a smile.
"Yes I agree, moving as a group would probably be good! After all we all habe our own skills I assume, and i can find what I need as we go, whole helping Cissinei to, how about you ummm..."
Shed trail off a moment tapping her chin in curiosity.
"Actually what Is your name miss...? It would probably help if we're gonna be traveling together for a bit. Saying 'hey girl a monsters behind you!" Might be a bit confusing"
She then chuckled at her joke, leaning back at waiting on the newcomers reply, in the meantime shed take one more look over Cissinei, making sure the spell had the intended effect.
So the pair were introduced as Cissnei and Krile. The one who claimed to be named Cissnei said she didn't know where she was, and then the girl supposedly named Krile said the two were on a mission together. One of them was probably lying. Seven sighed and pressed two fingers to her forehead. This was going to be one of those days, wasn't it?
After taking a moment of silence to help compose herself Seven turned her gaze towards the sky to get her bearings without responding to their queries just yet. Though eventually she turned slightly to her right and pointed towards a copse of trees on the other end of the clearing. "The nearest town should be that way." Her arm dropped back to her side as she addressed Cissnei's offer. "I was sent here to exterminate some of the monsters in this forest. The purpose was to make it safer for the nearby townsfolk, but taking you with me or allowing you to wander on your own would violate the spirit of my assignment- to protect the people who live here. I'll lead you out of the forest if you want and just come back later on my own."
Krile accused her of being bossy and while the girl might not have necessarily been wrong... Seven's gaze trailed from Krile, to Cissnei, to Krile again. Krile was a child with a stick and Cissnei seemed to be dressed like some kind of Milites executive- not exactly the type of people with a lot of combat experience. As best she could tell both of them were a liability. Already her oath to protect this world was being tested.
When Krile got around to asking for her name... the girl tilted her head slightly to glance off to the side, letting her bangs fall across her eyes for a moment before straightening again. "Seven. Just call me Seven." ...and ironically, she could sense phantoma rushing towards the group's position. Her expression hardened as she called forth her sword in a flash of crimson light. "We have incoming from the southeast, move!" She flipped her sword around and stabbed the point into the earth with both hands, letting her bag fall to the side as she channeled her power into the weapon, causing the crimson light to darken and distort into blackness.
A Coeurl lunged out from the brush, bearing it's fangs as it raced towards Krile- only for a spike of darkness to burst from the ground and skewer it through the chest, lifting it up into the air. The beast writhed and gnashed it's teeth... only for smaller spikes to grow and branch off from the first, ripping the monster apart to form a black and red, macabre tree. There was little gore as the monster faded into a swarm of pyreflies and dispersed. But... "There's a second!" That was all the warning she could offer as the second Coeurl dashed around the attack and flung itself towards Cissnei with it's claws outstretched.

Cissnei turned back to Krile and raised an eyebrow at her giggling. Seeing Krile suddenly brandish a wand and begin to use it, Cissnei raised up her hands to defend herself. There was a bright light for only a moment, and then just warmth. Cissnei blinked and looked herself over. She did not feel worse. In fact, she felt better. Did this girl have materia too? The magic seemed to work similarly. “I…uh…yes. I feel much better thank you. How did you? Do you have materia?” Cissnei pointed to rounded, polished orbs inset into her gloves. “Regardless, that is a very helpful spell…”
Cissnei was a little surprised at the spunk of Krile’s response to the newcomer. So much show, that Cissnei chuckled a little. When she heard ‘seven’, Cissnei could not help but feel something foggy in her memory. That number felt important. But, she was confident she never met this Seven girl in her life. She would have to ponder more on this later.
Cissnei let Krile do the introductions, however she frowned at Seven stating that she would be violating her objectives allowing them to help. That was untrue. Truth was Cissnei hated to be useless. Even worse, she hated not being active or a burden. After introductions Cissnei stated, “Seven, I do not live here, nor nearby. It would not be a -“
Seemed they had visitors.
Cissnei clicked her heals on the ground, and she felt the instant rush of magic sweep over her legs. The ground seemed to radiate green light beneath her feet, and a swirl of air picked up around her and swayed her hair. Her body felt lighter, and she could certainly move more lightly on her feet. Her faithful Rekka was already in her hand.
She heard the warning Seven shouted, and she was able to jump out of the way of the muscular feline. That could have been a terrible first impression. Hello, my name is Cissnei. I am good at being mauled by large felines.
While she took another jump backwards, she arced her arm and released her shuriken. It struck the coeurl hard in the shoulder, piercing through its thick skin. The beast let out an angry roar, before turning to pounce on the aggressor. Cissnei rolled away from the pounce, before landing on her toes and knees. She lunged herself forward to take hold of her weapon. She used her weight to shove the weapon not only deeper, but the beast itself into a tree. Sparks heated the air around Cissnei, as she punched fire from her hand into one eye of the beast. It bucked at the pain, knocking Cissnei to the ground with her weapon wrenched free.
Angry, the coeurl bared its fangs, shaking off its daze to circle around and pounce on Cissnei. For a horrifying second, it seemed Cissnei was about to get mauled…
But with her shuriken embedded in the ground beside her, she rolled away just as the coeurl’s chest pierced through one of the shuriken’s tips. The beast then laid still, before turning into threads of light.
Panting softly, Cissnei stood up and thumbed her cheek. With a hard shove, she pushed the heavy cat to the ground, to reclaim her weapon. She whipped it to the side to make sure it was clean, before placing it back on her belt.
“So…civilization is in that direction?” She asked Seven, pointing her finger in the direction the other had mentioned. “It probably is not safe to sit here. If there is one, then there is two more. Let me help with the pack, it will help us move more quickly.” And then she gave Krile a look of warmth, “First of all, are you okay? And second, you had a purpose? It sounds like you are gathering something. What is it? I will help you look on the way.” Cissnei acted as if nothing out of the ordinary happened, and she extended a palm face up to Seven for stuff to be handed to her. She knew better than to go straight for the supplies with her type.
“The offer also still stands, Seven. I hate to be indebted to someone.” Cissnei gave a smile, as she spoke light heartedly.
Materia? Krile looked confused for a moment as Cissinei pointed to the gems in her glove. That was curious, was it how she used magic, was it similar to how she and her friends got power from the crystals that chose them? It seemed different though, they were gifted different sets of skills, jobs or classes one could say. It seemed like... The gems themselves casted magic for her, or at least... It sounded that way, she could be wrong. She ran her hands through a small satchel at her side, pulling out a yellow piece of crystal, the shard fitting firmly in her hand as she looked it over, so many memories contained within...
"I think they might be different, my skills... My magic, I'm able to use them because of these shards, they impart their power to me... Then I use them how I need to, it's... More than magic, but that's mainly how I use it, my friends use them in other ways, though"
She'd leave out where the shards came from for now. Not because she didn't trust ether of them but because it was a really long story, namely how she ended up with the power in the first place. That part... Also wasn't a memory she was particularly keen on reliving right now ether. Her Grandpa... She still missed him. He would know what to do for Bartz, he would know how to handle this with ease. He was a good but... He was a smart goof. She loved him, missed her even now.
"I guess to put it simply... These pieces of crytal give me ghe power I use in combat"
Yes, that was the easiest way to explain it. Hopefully it was a way she understood. She was wrung fr her thoughts by Seven's words. Go back to town? She couldn't do that yet! She had to finish her job here. Their was supposed to be something here... Another potential remedy. If their was even a small chance, she'd search this darn forest hesd to toe, haunted or no!
"I can't go back yet... Even if we took Cissinei back to town I couldn't stay, I need to see if something's here, something for a friend. Besides it doesn't sound like she's from..."
Monsters appeared and immeditly Kryle's focus went to her crystal shard, in a flash of yellow light her clothing changed to the familiar hooded garb of a black mage. However as she attempted to aim a spell at the beast Cissinei brought her own weapon to bare and scuffled with the beast. She stood at thw ready behind her, resdy to fire off a spell if the beast closed in ok her but... The older woman was really agile as it turned out, she readly handled the monster. Krile sighed in relief and dispelled the crystals power. She was right back to the point to, which made her chuckle despite the serious situation. It reminded her of her grandpa, though maybe a little less silly. Krile agreed with her words though, if they worked together their respective situations could be solved a lot easier. She gave a nod.
"I can help to! I'm a lot stronger than I look you know, beaten a lot worse than a few monsters with my friends"
She missed it... All of them together... But Faris at least, still knew who she was. Their promise....
Cissinei asked why she was here. Well their was no harm in telling her, she already said she was looking for something as is. Besides she could use some help, more eyes to look for what she needed.
"Theirs supposidly a purplish herb in the forest that helps a person's memory when made up into medicine. It could be a complete lie or false rumor but... If it's here, and it can help my friend... I want to find it, ya know? I want to help him... Remeber"
So even if it was a false rumor she'd follow it... Krile would do everything she could to help her friends, everything she could to keep them safe. They made a promise... A promise she would keep, even if some of them didn't remember it.
The way Cissinei acted like everything was normal... Yeah, the similarities between them were enough to make her smile. As for Seven... Yeah, she didn't have any intention of leaving yet. She had her job to do, and if these monsters were going to out others in danger... Then she had to help as well, she inherited that role from her grandpa, she held it with her friends. She wasn't going to abandon that role.
"Right! I'm here anyway... So I'll help to, it's kind of my job anyway, helping people"
She wasn't scared of them, a couple of monsters were nothing compared to what they went through with Exdeath, she wasn't about to run away now.
Even if it was haunted she could handle a couple of evil spirits, speciully if they decided to start inhabiting trees!
Cissnei watched her curiously as Krile pulled out a satchel, she tilted her head curiously. The crystal was definitely not as well shaped or cut as her own stone. But there seemed to be a special sensation around it. Cissnei looked back up at Krile and listened to her explanation, “I see. They amplify your abilities then? Or rather, they act as a conduit for your potential skills.” Cissnei asked softly, “Oh? So there are more people who can use these as well?” Cissnei asked curious, asking about Krile’s friends. But as Cissnei thought about her crystal, it did seem different than the ways her worked.
Cissnei gave Krile a slight nod. “I believe you. Looks can be deceiving, and great things come in small packages.” She gave Kriles a soft smile. Cissnei was not one to judge someone by their appearance, but rather their actions. The girl’s healing magic was powerful, and she was sure it was just a small subset of what she could do. But she noticed that the girl had a distant look in her eyes. “Is everything OK?’ Cissnei studied her for a moment and waited, but she would not force the girl to explain where her mind was.
However, Cissnei would give Krile a nod. “A purple herb, you say? Very well, I will help you look. I owe you one.” She crossed her arms and began thinking. Her knuckle came up and she pressed it to her lips in though. Her other hand supported her elbow. “How did you hear about this herb? Did they say where in the forest it would be?” Cissnei looked around, “Wherever that direction would be… And your friend does he have an injury? Or lose his memory in this forest?”
Cissnei dusted herself off and looked around the forest. She did not hear anymore of those Coeurls for now. But without knowing where she was, she did not know which fauna or flora to prepare for. She looked up to see Seven still in her own mind. The girl seemed overly concerned about them, but they made it clear they were not leaving. “Let’s go help your friend.”
