His words warped slightly in the thick of the chaos that seeped in the air, earth, and trees around them. The distortion however didn't change the fact she heard him clearly. For a moment, she questioned if he was drunk from how he moved. But then something caught her full and undivided attention. He offered to demonstrate and afterward a crimson streak almost lightning like in appearance swept past her. The hat slipped from her grasp unnoticed as her eyes were trained on the streak, only for it to end with a thud.
Her gaze had followed the path of crimson up to where it came to an abrupt stop. Where the light stopped, Ardyn stood, a blade sticking out of the tree beside him. The fact he staggered after using such a maneuver clearly meant he was out of practice but it was still very impressive. Her eyes slipped to the fedora in his hand for a brief moment before she clapped a couple times. "Now that was a pretty cool move. How about one of my own?"
As she offered to show him a move of her own, a spark of red electricity would crackle around her hand. With a flick of her wrist, that spark was now traveling from tree to tree. It would take just enough time for Ardyn to regain his balance before there was a loud crack in the air. Following the loud reverberating crack, several trees would spontaneously burst. Shards of wood and branches flew everywhere and yet she stood there unfazed. Trees were impaled by spears of wood. Dirt loosened and tossed about as fragments shattered the previously unbroken earth.
If Ardyn were to blink, she would be gone. Only to be standing next to the mostly unfazed tree that sheathed his blade at the moment. "You should really show me how you do that. It would be the best surprise for Sis." Her tone was matter of fact and yet, it was clear that she was in fact impressed. Now whether or not he still had the had after the messy shattering of trees as if they were toothpicks was another question. "You know....I almost think you should meet one of my friends. You'd just love them."
Did...Did Ardyn just gain a friend? I never thought that would happen.
I'm an impatient traveler ready to turn ship.
The fabric in his hand was stiff and familiar. His hat – successfully rescued from captivity. Ardyn brushed it off and placed it atop his head once more as clapping echoed slowly from behind him. ”Now that was a pretty cool move. How about one of my own?” Ardyn hardly had time to turn to her before the retaliation had begun. She raised her hand to the sky, and with a spark of red lightning, the treetops burst as though lit by explosives. Ardyn raised a hand to shield himself from the shower of debris, not caring to move even as wooden shards pierced the ground around him like spears. Once the air had cleared, he opened an eye to survey the results. The forest was in shambles.
Whoever and whatever this girl was, it seemed she was quite serious.
The girl had used incredible magic. She’d shifted herself through space, manipulated reality, and called upon the darkness of monstrous creatures which lurked in the dark. It was all so familiar even as it was wielded with a clumsy, child’s hand. He wasn’t surprised to hear her voice suddenly beside him. In fact, he’d have expected nothing less.
”You should really show me how you do that. It would be the best surprise for Sis.” Ardyn couldn’t tell her intentions nor her mood, but she seemed only mildly impressed by his powers and not the least bit fazed by his macabre appearance. He turned to her slowly and wondered as to how the moonlight might catch at the corruption staining his skin. He wondered if she had seen (or even been) more monstrous herself. ”You know, I almost think you should meet one of my friends. You’d just love them.”
”Oh?” Ardyn tilted his head in interest. ”That certainly sounds...interesting.” Yes, interesting so long as they were anything like her. Otherwise it seemed she was organizing a kind of assassination mission. Either way, he supposed he could do worse. ”I have little else to do, I suppose. But first, I must insist…” He gestured towards the hat on his head before placing a step of distance between them. ”You promised a question, yes? Then I must ask, if you are so obliged, where did you gain such a curse? Your, ah…power.” He glanced from her the darkened clouds behind her to her hand which had crackled with lightning only a minute earlier. ”You can color me intrigued.”
With scattered debris and spears of wood scattered about them, Lumina looked up to Ardyn as he spoke. The fact his eyes were yellowed didn't bother her much but she did keep it in mind, especially as the darkened surrounding complimented them so well by making them that much more vivid. The staining of his skin however was definitely something new she hadn't seen before and was somthign she would just have to ask about. But of course who could forget the...terms...of the game they had just played. She smiled a little as the question was asked and found it rather interesting that of all things he picked her powers.
She raised a finger to her chin and tapped it, her features scrunched in thought. As she contemplated the question at hand, the excess chaos previously called slowly faded away, dispersing as if it had never been present and as quickly as the smoke of a candle that had just been blown out. "I've had these powers for as long as I can remember." She held up her hand, a small black flame in her palm. At that flame's core however, was a flicker of light hidden by the chaos that was the flame.
In a moment, the flame was gone and her eyes returned to him. "I honestly don't know how I got them but I do know just how volatile they can be." It was an honest comment, even if she was teasing his curiosity just a tad. She looked from him back to the destruction around them. She didn't regret what was done even if it was intended just to show off. And yet, her heart felt weighted down as if saddened by what had happened. It was an unfortunate side effect of holding another's memories.
She looked back at him and examined the staining on his skin, even in the pallor of the moonlight it seemed odd and a little eerie. "What happened to you? Looks almost like a disease but your eyes... Hmm... Oh, I know. They're just like some monsters I've seen." The disease comment was a direct reference to his skin and the discoloration present. How a child, a young teen, could understand such a thing was odd but held true to the memories she held at her core. Memories she dared not even hint at having or there would be much to answer for.
The girl didn’t seem impressed by his question, but gave a show of thoughtfulness regardless. She touched at her chin, eyebrows furrowed as though struggling with a deep problem, before telling him she’d been born with her powers and hadn’t the slightest clue as to their origins. It wasn’t exactly a helpful sentiment, but he supposed it couldn’t be helped. Whatever the reason, she seemed just as lost in the details as he was.
The forest was starting to clear of her malevolent fog, and Ardyn took a deep breath, enjoying the darkness while it lasted. Even now, he had no idea as to what exactly it was, but he’d appreciated it all the same. A boost to his power. A brief thrill in a world far too boring for him. The girl held up a hand and showed her the same darkness condensed into a flame. It flickered briefly before she snuffed it out between her fingers. How oddly alluring…
”I honestly don’t know how I got them, but I do know just how volatile they can be.” An admission that she couldn’t control it then. She looked over at the wooden shrapnel about them, considering it casually, before returning her attention to him. ”What happened to you?” The shift was almost abrupt, though he’d expected it. One didn’t run into a monster without having a few questions for him. ”Looks almost like a disease but your eyes…” Her gaze flicked to his own, and he smiled back innocently. ”Hm…Oh, I know. They’re just like some monsters I’ve seen.”
Ardyn laughed. Well, she wasn’t wrong.
”Ah, yes. A monster. I suppose that is the best word for it.” Ardyn offered her a pleasant smile before sweeping his hat from his head and lowering himself into a half-hazard bow. ”If I may introduce myself, I am Ardyn Izunia. A man of no consequence and the host of myriad daemons. I do hope you’ll excuse the mess. I try to keep myself presentable, but your call, ah…excited them to say the least. Hence my curiosity.”
Ardyn straightened, replacing the hat upon his head before considering her thoughtfully. ”And you? If you were born with that power then I dare say you can’t be human, but I’m afraid I know little else between mortals and gods. Your nature perplexes me. Though I suppose not all is meant to be understood.”
Ardyn turned from her and took several thoughtless steps through the snow. He kept his eyes on the sky, hands threaded behind his back, before coming to a stop. ”You know. I’d say you’re the spitting image of another I met drifting through this aimless world. She was clad like a reaper and wielded an odd kind of darkness in the palm of her hand.” He glanced back at the girl, head cocked curiously. ”A relative, perhaps?”
Lumina listened carefully as he spoke, her gaze watching his every movement. She smiled a little at fact he was very polite. It was a bit strange seeing someone that polite when she was used to people being so depressed and lost. He was so kind as to introduce himself as Ardyn Izunia, a strange name but considering she has heard worse, she was in no position to comment on it. She watched quietly as he went on to talk about how she couldn't exactly be human if she was born with that power and then to describe someone that instantly widened her eyes. She almost wanted to hope it was Lightning but....she didn't wield the darkness. At least not how she remembered anyway.
She waited until after he finished speaking before speaking. "You're not wrong." She said, with a flicker of that smirk returning. Her comment was intended to be mistaken as a comment that could regard either the 'you can't be human' comment or about the description of whom Ardyn had met. She of course had the highest hope that he would misunderstand. It usually led to such interesting conversations. Especially when the comment had been a somewhat confirmation of his statement.
"Did you get a name?" She asked, trying to be nonchalant about it but she did really want to know. Even though the timing of her asking would further make her prior comment be more confusing. Oh well, it was all in good fun. "Now if this person dressed like a reaper...did they have a scythe too?" Now, she was clearly just playing along with his statement but at the same time she was intrigued. She could feel Lightning here in this world but she could also feel...someone else. T/hat someone else, she would need to investigate personally and at a later time.
His description meant something to her. That was obvious enough. She almost froze at his words, eyes widening, before playing it all off with an ambiguous "You're not wrong." It could have meant anything, but Ardyn wasn't presumptuous enough to guess as to the specifics. He only needed to see that spark of recognition, and that was more than enough for him. He smiled at her patiently, waiting for the rest to come in time.
And so it did.
"Did you get a name?" she asked almost casually. Almost, but not quite. "Now if this person is dressed like a reaper..." she continued, eyes traveling up with a kind of childish mischief. "Did they have a scythe too?" Ardyn chuckled at the joke, shaking his head before wagging his finger in the negative.
"No, no, this reaper carried a tool far more deadly. A sword as it was. Not quite as poetic, but effective all the same." Ardyn stopped his pacing and turned to her, head tilted with his budding questions. "As for her name, no, I'm quite afraid I wasn't lucky enough to catch it. She was rather secretive, after all. And so brash. I couldn't get a word from her but questions and demands. I don't think I saw her crack a smile." Ardyn sighed at the thought. Tragic. Truly tragic.
"If she is some relative of yours, I imagine you should hurry to her side. She might not have much time left, what with that awful darkness consuming her. I tried to warn her, but oh! She wouldn't listen to a word I had to say!" His eyes darted to the girl, glinting with interest and amusement in equal parts. He had no goal, really. Nothing to gain from his game here, but what a stroke of fate that he'd be led directly to the doppelganger of his assailant turned accomplice! He didn't believe in signs, but he knew an opportunity when he saw one, and if nothing else, this girl could prove quite interesting.
So he kept his charade, taking a few more steps through the snow as his coat trailed out behind him and he touched thoughtfully at his cheek."She had pink hair. A crimson sword. Eyes like death itself. Sound familiar?" He turned suddenly to face her, eyes bright as they met hers. "Oh, how I'd love to manage a reunion!"
She appeared quite thoughtful as Ardyn spoke, his every word meaning something very important. Everything was all fun and games but the luck of finding someone so soon that knew Lightning. It made everything so much easier. "No, no, this reaper carried a tool far more deadly. A sword as it was. Not quite as poetic, but effective all the same." His pacing paused for a moment and for once she remained silent, purposely wanting to hear everything he had to say on the subject. This game now getting much more amusing by the minute. "As for her name, no, I'm quite afraid I wasn't lucky enough to catch it. She was rather secretive, after all. And so brash. I couldn't get a word from her but questions and demands. I don't think I saw her crack a smile." She smirked a little. Now that sounds like Lightning, she thought as his commentary went on.
"If she is some relative of yours, I imagine you should hurry to her side. She might not have much time left, what with that awful darkness consuming her. I tried to warn her, but oh! She wouldn't listen to a word I had to say! She had pink hair. A crimson sword. Eyes like death itself. Sound familiar?" She had remained silent as he continued to pace thoughtfully but the question and his eager eyes prompted more than just silence. She supposed she could humor him and give him what he wanted, after all, he did make finding Lightning that much easier. "Sounds like Sis, always getting into trouble." She let a faux exasperated sigh leave her lips accompanied by a shake of her head. "Whatever will I do with her? She just never learns." But that wasn't all... It was one single little phrase that left his lips that made her day and made arriving here that much better.
"Oh, how I'd love to manage a reunion!"
A reunion. Now that was exactly what she wanted and to have it so close but so far, she just had to accept his offer. If, of course, he would be so willing to assist her with that. "Absolutely! The more the merrier. Guess I should have broken more than the tip of that crimson sword of hers when I had the chance. Oh well." Right now, Ardyn had given her the hope of making step one of her scheme easy. If only things had been that simple back home.
Scene end unless Lumina takes issue with Ardyn shoving a deadly plague at her sister. xDD
I'm an impatient traveler ready to turn ship.
"Sounds like Sis, always getting into trouble." The girl let out a slow, almost theatrical sigh before shaking her head. "Whatever will I do with her? She just never learns." Ardyn's eyes lit up at the over-wrought lamentation -- at her exaggerated movements and the words she would never have naturally spoken to herself. It was as though he was facing down a mirror of himself. A younger, feminine, spritely mirror, but a mirror nonetheless. And when he suggested that he manage the reunion personally, she took the line and ran with it.
"Absolutely!" she said, much to his eternal surprise. "The more the merrier. Guess I should have broken more than the tip of that crimson sword of hers when I had the chance. Oh well."
"Ah..." Now he'd never expected that. Ardyn was so rarely indulged after all, and he hadn't actually meant to return to Provo, not yet at least. Of course, there were few others that could track the woman quite so precisely -- what with her daemonic curse -- but he wasn't ready to meet her again. Not quite. "Now isn't this an awkward situation...?" Ardyn hummed to himself again before turning away, looking up to the moon thoughtfully. The barren trees filtered its sickly moonlight, and shielded him from even the dim touch of its burn. It was almost like old times.
"I actually had business elsewhere. It simply can't be undone!" A lie, but a harmless one. He'd wanted to see more of the world than that miserable, plague-ridden city of monsters and floodwaters. He needed only return to it once it had reached its peak and there were enough daemons for him to harness for himself. Until then, he had seeds of corruption to plant elsewhere. "Oh, but I mustn't keep you from your sister! What to do, what to do..." Ardyn shook his head in his own exaggerated lament. The cogs of his mind were ticking. What an odd situation he'd fallen into.
"Hm. But I suppose there's no other choice, is there? You'll simply have to go alone." He turned to her almost solemnly, eyes filled with faux regret and just a hint of malice. "I last left her in the city of Provo. It's a trade city roughly...north of here." He gestured vaguely towards what he thought to be the Northeast. "But you'll find its in a bit of a crisis. You see, your sister demanded I grant her my powers, and they've run havoc on the place. For most, my powers prove fatal -- for others, a curse." Ardyn's eyes darted to hers, a dark smile on his lips. "If you're touched by that corruption, I'm the only one who can spare you, I'm afraid. So do be careful, and if you start to fear the light, I must insist that you seek me out. I shan't be hard to find."
Ardyn offered her a wave of his arm, almost in the form of a bow. "Well then. I believe I've offered you more than enough to satisfy your curiosity. Until we meet again?"
Lumina had almost had him in check in this little verbal game of chess they played. Even when the tables were turned, she still greeted the flicker of malice and the faux regret with a smile, even if it meant letting said smile fade for a moment to continue the game. She sighed dramatically, accepting the lie...or was it a half truth? Either way, she listened to what he said and was actually rather surprised. Fatal? This power he gave Lightning could be fatal? Well Lightning did have a nasty habit of acquiring fatal powers or pissing off the wrong people, so this was a new one to add to the book.
With a light shake of her head, she smirked and almost gleefully told him what would happen. "Just a fair warning, if this is fatal then Sis will end up hunting you down like a rabid dog and I'll be there to watch." Watch, yes. Intervene, maybe. It all depended on how things went. At the same time, she never did exactly say what side she would be on if she did show up to watch. All the more reason to wonder what could possibly be going on in that devious little mind of hers.
Until we meet again.
Depending on the situation, the reunion could very well be a pleasant one. Or perhaps it could be something far more dangerous. At this moment, she decided to let him be on his way with one last...warning.
"If you insist I come find you, then consider it a promise. I'll find you wherever you go." To most, her words would be those of a child promising to find a friend regardless of distance. To those who have seen the other side of the coin, those words meant that there was no hiding. No matter where you went, she can and will find you. The only question that remained was her purpose should she succeed. Until we meet again." Came her last few words before once again disappearing into her little rift of light.
