And If you see my reflection in the snow covered hills
Theirjourney through the mountain was both arduous and monotonous simultaneously. As Celes fought the beasts and wolves that seemed to spawn out of the thin air, Mateus was sure to keep his distance. He was impressed by her physical prowess and secretly glad that it had not been directed towards him. He guessed it must have been the military training that allowed her to zone out and continue the onslaught. As for himself, he couldn't help but keep track of the twists and turns they had taken along the way. Every time they would come across a chest, Mateus would scoops as much as he could before Celes continued on her one-set-mind course. He did wonder who would hide this stuff in such a hostile environment, but it was his now, so he didn't care that much.
He was beginning to grow weary. This exertion was more than he was used to especially trying to keep up. He felt as though they had been going for hours. He wanted to stop and take a breath, but he didn't think the idea would hold much weight with his fearless leader though so he kept the thought to himself to save the headache of an argument. The monotony of it all was slowly causing him to zone out. A couple of times he almost went down the wrong path before hurriedly snapping back to alertness and catching up with Celes once more. He thought the tunnels would never end when a monstrous howling caused all his senses to ignite.
Mateus didn't have much time to survey where and what the noise had come from before he was being forcefully dragged away by Celes before they were both crushed by the beast. The icy fear coursing through his veins rooted him to the spot making Celes' demand redundant. He watched their intricate dance each seeming to almost read the other's move. He was entranced as the she kept narrowly avoiding the beasts flails and it her pointed sword. That was before the beast decided that he faired a better target.
Mateus' arms flew up as though his staff and his frail arms would shelter him from the fatal blow that was about to hit. His mind raced frantically as they yeti seemed to fly at him in slow motion. He thought of all the things he had failed to do in a rapid fire slideshow in his minds eye. His empire never completed. He then saw a flash of silver hair. Whose? Would this silver-haired person know he had died? Did it matter? Did anything matter now? But as he waited for the killing strike to land, it didn't. Something had stayed the yeti's hand
He heard the crunch and smack of Celes' body before his other sense caught up. As he was coming out of his own thoughts, he drew back as the yeti was taken by flames. His nerves and the awful stench of burning flesh caused Matues to vomit as the yeti smoldered. He worried that the beast would continue his attacks ,but the beast retreated. Mateus guessed it wouldn't make it too far before it was consumed by the flames. After his vomiting turned into dry heaving and his shot nerves began to calm themselves he finally looked over to where he hard the sickening cracking.
Mateus was amazed that she was still alive after he realized how far that she had been thrown and how hard. She was mumbling something to herself that he couldn't quite make out. So weak and defenseless, if he hadn't been stuck with her for so many hours, he would have sworn it was a different woman broken and lying there. How easy it would be to take her sword and leave her here to die. Her blade was fine enough to have struck down all the creatures thus far. Even with his limited knowledge of melee combat he reckoned as long as he didn't run into a yeti he could probably make his way out. It couldn't be that much further could it? His plan was set and he began to approach her. He knelt next to her and began to reach across her for the sword, but one nagging thought stopped him before he finished his task: had he looked like this when the caravan that had found him delivered him to the old woman's cottage the day before?
Mateus looked over Celes and imagined himself in such a condition. Her face was a revolting mix of her hair sticking to the sweat of her brow and the blood that seemed to be pouring out of her nose like a faucet. He stopped to look at the arm his hand was hovering over. The bruises were black and many. He took a sharp inhale as the phantom pain danced across his own forearm. He could almost feel that skull splitting headache he had endured yesterday and ran a cold hand across his own temple. Why was this happening? He should just take the sword and go. She had been enough of a nuisance and a headache to him already. But hadn't she also not left him to fend for himself? Mateus sighed and descended a little more until he was sitting on the cavern floor just watching as she took labored breaths
Mateus still didn't understand why he was helped by both this girl and the old woman. There's was nothing to be gained from doing such. It didn't make any sense. His mind wondered to a single phrase that he had never given much credence to before. Something he had only heard fools say before. "A life for a life," he spoke softly not realizing he had even said anything. Was this perhaps the reason for the acts? Did they think that simple by helping him he would do the same in return? It seemed so simplistic and ridiculous to him. His life was worth more than a peasants or some general girl with a sharp tongue. He viewed her body once more as he sat near her side. It was more than that though. Mateus ground his teeth as a new plan formed. This, this was the perfect opportunity to test the newfound magic he had learned. If he could master this, he could master other magic he thought. Also, if more danger lie ahead, it wouldn't hurt to have her around.
Mateus retracted his arm from across Celes' body. Scooting himself in a better position, he did what he though would be the most effective thing to do. With one arm he slowly cupped the underside of her head so it wasn't pressed against the hard ground and placed the other one upon her forehead. He began to recite the curative words he had just learned letting himself become one with them. He repeated them like a mantra wiping the hair out of her face. He felt the same warmth that had healed his hand spread to her. Mateus stopped when he felt he had done all he could. He laid her back down gently and retreated a few inches. He wondered if it had been enough, and thus he waited and watched.

Use your own eyes, and see for yourself which side I'm on.
”You can’t keep running out into trouble like that. One of these days you’ll get really hurt, you know?”
Celes’ lips thinned from where she sat, arms-crossed and half-collapsed into Setzer’s purple suede couch. ”It was about to use magic,” she said and Locke shook his head.
”Oh right, for your little…” He held out his arm as though raising a sword and smirked at her. ”Well see if I throw a feather your way next time. I worked hard for that phoenix down.”
”You stole it.”
”Excuse me? It was treasure! I hunted it! Say it again. Treasure hunter.”
Celes laughed despite herself, and that seemed to be all that Locke had wanted. He put a hand on her shoulder and looked at her without his usual grin. ”Seriously, you scared me out there, Celes,” he said. ”I want to keep you safe.”
Celes frowned at him before glancing away. The memory of Rachel rose between them as sickening as the perfume of a thousand flowers. ”I can take care of myself.”
”Yeah, yeah. I know. You’re stronger than me by now, aren’t you?”
”By now?”
”Hey, who saved who in this story?”
Celes smirked before giving him a dry look. ”You got lucky. That’s all.”
”Luck’s one of my greatest strong-suits. I’ll take that[/] as a compliment.” He leaned his elbow against the back of the couch and propped his cheek on the back of his hand. Outside, she could hear the constant whirr of the Falcon’s engines. They hummed into every surface of the lower deck. ”Just be careful, okay? What if next time I’m not there?”
Celes gave him a critical look. ”There’s fourteen people on this airship and we’re all going to the same place. Why would I be fighting alone?”
”I don’t know.” Locke turned to watch the ceiling, hand still touching at his forehead and the edge of his bandana. ”Just call me worried, I guess.”
***
Every inch of her hurt. That was the first thought that returned to her next to ’What happened?’ and ’Who’s touching me?’. As her thoughts cleared, she opened her eyes not to the wooden panels of the Falcon but to craggy stone slick with ice. A low groan escaped her as she pressed her fingers to her forehead and tried to take stock of her own injuries. Her right arm was a mess. She didn’t even have to look at it for all the pain she felt there, and when she touched her nose...was that blood?
The yeti. She hadn’t really forgotten it, but just let it slip her mind while her thoughts were sent off elsewhere. She’d been struck with a blow that might have killed her if not for her usual magical protection. Still, she’d been left too dazed to do much of anything for herself. And did she sense magic?
She forced herself upright and saw him sitting there against the cave wall -- still clad in his extravagant silks and odd makeup. Celes touched at the back of her head. There was a tender spot there matted with blood, but the wound was gone. ”Did you…?” she started before frowning at him. ”I thought you didn’t know how to use magic.”
Celes sat up a little straighter until she could prop herself against the wall. Her body was battered, but her head was clear and that was all that really mattered. ”If you’re ever in a fight like that again, you’ll want to learn how to focus your spells where someone’s hurt the worst. I’ll show you.” She muttered a few words and brought curative magic to her fingers, touching at the purple trails down her right arm. The magic sparked as it touched her skin, and she sighed in relief as the color faded.
”When it’s over, you should to check for broken bones and reset any if you have to before you try magic there. Otherwise you’ll just have to break it again later and no one wants that.” She touched at her nose, checking it for misalignment, but it seemed she hadn’t broken anything. She brought her magic there too though it couldn’t do anything for the blood. With that done, she doused herself in another all-purpose healing spell before taking a breath and bracing herself. She rose to her feet slowly and carefully with one hand gripping the wall.
”But if you’re in a pinch or just don’t have enough magic for all of that, a general spell is great. Focus it on the head. That’s where the worst problems are.” Celes let out a shaken breath and checked herself for any more wounds. Her body still hurt. Every inch of it. But she thought she could still walk and swing a sword, and when her magic was on limited supply, that’s all that mattered. She looked back at him before pausing and glancing away.
What was she supposed to say?
”Thanks.” The word came out a little too gruffly so she cleared her throat and tried again. ”If you really...Well, I mean. It got the better of me. So thank you.”
’What if next time I’m not there?’ Celes let out a breath and pushed a tangle of bloody hair over her ear. The thought almost made her laugh though she wasn’t sure if there was anything humorous about it. ”Someone used to tell me I should be more careful when I fight. It’s just in my nature to run into trouble, I guess.” Just like with those burning buildings in Torensten or the forest with Zack. She really hadn’t listened to Locke at all, had she?
”We should keep moving, but we must be close. Don’t you think it’s lighter in here than before?” She squinted down the tunnel where the yeti had disappeared. Maybe it knew better than they did where the exit was. She started forward before stopping again, glancing at him. ”Your magic was...good. Effective,” she said before biting her tongue and continuing on.
Celes had never been the best at showing gratitude to those who really deserved it.
And If you see my reflection in the snow covered hills
As Mateus waited for her to return to her senses, Mateus sat there just watching over her. If the yeti decided to return that would be it. They would both just be its dinner or worse easy combat practice. A weird and foreign feeling tickled at his innards which made him feel uneasy. It felt warm in his stomach and as though his chest was expanding. He assumed it was just the rebound feeling that using this worlds' magic. He wondered if it was sapping his own vitality to give to another, but he didn't feel anything negative. He would have to research this further when they left this accursed place.
When Celes finally came to, Mateus was waiting for her heartfelt gratitude, but what he got instead was a questioning accusation. Still, he did need her for a bit longer so he held back his sharp tongue and answered honestly, "I didn't. I read it in that woman's musings. Magic on this world works much differently than where I am from. It wasn't hard to pick up. Here, I just had to learn the incantation whereas there I would have to... well let's say it was just a second nature," he responded. She already distrusted him as far as he could tell; she need not know that he had consorted with demons to learn his arcane powers. He felt she would have something to say about that just like everything else.
Surprising to him, she went on to explain best how to heal someone. He thought it pretty rude to correct him. He had saved her life after all. He just sighed as she explained the most effective ways to use curative magic. It did make sense though what she way saying, so he took mental note of what she was explaining. When he thought she was done explaining things, he stood waiting for her to compose herself enough to continue on their way. He was about to retort that he had only done what he did so he could use her guidance when his words were stopped by her simple thanks. He stopped before he began and just blinked at her. It was weird hearing those words in a genuine way and especially coming from this woman. He simply nodded and huffed as his way of accepting the thanks.
Celes said that his magic had been good which also shocked him. Where was this well of compliments stemming from? "I uh," he began searching for the words. Had he really done anything other than rudimentary? What words did one use when genuinely complimented? He decided to boast to make up for the strange feelings, "I must say this type of magic. White magic? It's much different than what I'm used to. My casting was one to be feared and awed by," he left it at that. After all this he didn't need her leaving over something she disagreed with like something so minor as him having to have burn down a village of traitors.
"Come let's make our leave of this place," he replied indicating that he agreed that it did seem a bit brighter in this cavern. "After that battle and the fiery yeti, if not yet dead, running about, I wouldn't be surprised if the other cretins of the mount kept their distance."
His prediction proved to be true as they continued down the next corridor him sticking close behind her in case of another ambush. He stuck close to her but there was a relaxed air about the corridor. It was almost as though the chamber they had just left was the last real room of the paths in the mountain with this one exit seeming to grow brighter with each passing step. The passage took a pretty steep descent and as the light increased Matt had to squint to make see as the light of the sun was almost blinding and not fall into Celes in front of him. The dank smell of the cave gave way to the cold but fresh air of snow. Luckily for the two, their last stretch was over quickly and they exited into the bright snowy cliff side of the mountain.
Mateus was surprised to see that the storm had abated. Looking over the side of the mountain he noticed that they were quite close to the bottom, maybe a mile or so's walk round the path. He wondered how they had gotten so far down the mountain, but perhaps their downward stretch had been much steeper than he had thought. "I'm much done with this place. I say we descend."
Although still cold, the bottom of the mountain was much more bearable than from whence they came. A fork branched with a weathered sign barely readable pointing to a few different paths. He read it and decided that Sonora seemed the closest. Perhaps he could make it there before nightfall. He began to walk away but for some reason stopped. Now that they were away from the immediate danger, his distaste for her disagreeable mannerisms deterred him from wanting her continuing company, but something still kept him from saying it so plainly. "I presume our paths diverge here, Celes" he stated turning back to Celes to talk to her. He had many things he wanted to say to her many of which he knew would just lead to another round of arguments. "If our paths were to cross once more," he said waving his hand through the air as though the act would string his words together for him, "I would not consider us enemies." It was the best he could do. His thanks was not easily attained and even less easily articulated. Leaving it at that, he slowly turned back round and began his way towards the new city his pockets lined and a new skill obtained and with something else he couldn't quite put his finger on.

AND DONE WOOO
Use your own eyes, and see for yourself which side I'm on.
”I uh…” Matt looked just as uncertain receiving her compliment as she’d been giving it. The pause between them was almost painful. ”I must say this type of magic. White magic? It's much different than what I'm used to. My casting was one to be feared and awed by.”
A cure spell. To be feared and awed by. Celes hoped that he couldn’t see her smirk. It was like he didn’t know how to socialize properly without an army behind him. It was almost cute in its own way. A classic fish out of water story, though this fish was an egotistical ex-emperor and his water was likely the subjugation of thousands. Still, he was so clumsy about it all, that she could have almost learned to find it endearing.
Almost.
The rest of the cave was hostile but uninteresting. The monsters had mostly fled after her final battle, and as the air cleared of dust and stagnation, she could have sworn she heard the familiar whistle of wind through mountain passes. They strove ahead until they found it -- the light of the rising sun blazing white against the snow. Celes could have almost laughed at the sight of it. Finally, they were free.
”Well, that could have gone better,” she said, touching at her still sore arm. What would she look like stumbling back into town covered in blood? Certainly she’d be taken seriously then. A fierce and competent general who’d just been beaten senseless by an oversized ape. Somehow she doubted the first impression would much help her cause.
Celes and Matt descended the mountain together, not out of real need but because they were both going the same direction anyway. Celes never took her hand off of her sword. With more space to maneuver and the sky mostly clear, she doubted they’d run into anything quite as dangerous as they’d found in the cave, but the mountain was still dangerous and she’d have to have been a fool to lower her guard. Celes continued to walk in front of her unwilling companion more out of habit than anything. If they were attacked again, it only made sense that she take the full force of it.
It didn’t take long for the terrain to even out and the path to split. Matt lingered there by a sign pointing in two directions -- one way for Sonora and the other for for a road she thought headed back south towards the Crystalus Divider. He started towards Sonora immediately, not even looking at her as he took the lead for once. Celes blinked her surprise and started to follow when he stopped and turned back to her again. ”I presume our paths diverge here, Celes.”
”Oh.” Celes frowned. She didn’t know why he presumed she wouldn’t also go along to Sonora. In fact, she couldn’t think of anywhere else to go that wouldn’t be so far away. If they were to the north of the mountain, then going around it would take time and there was really no other way to go on this side but that dull military city she’d been avoiding by reputation alone. Maybe he just wanted to be rid of her now that they’d reached a main road. That was probably it. ”Right.”
She’d give him about a half an hour’s head start. If he was that intent on traveling alone. Part of her hoped to find him attacked by something on the side of the road. Nonlethally, of course.
”If our paths were to cross once more…” He waved his hand at her as he thought of a way to finish. ”I would not consider us enemies.”
Celes almost laughed. She must have really gotten under his skin if that was the best he could say after everything they’d been through. Or maybe he was just a fish floundering on dry land again. ”Right,” she said with a smirk. ”Not enemies.” She couldn’t disagree. If she ever saw him again it would be far too soon unless he was bleeding. Still, as he turned and started walking away, she wondered if that was really the tone she wanted to leave on. It had certainly been...an eventful night and not one she’d ever want to remember again, but it felt wrong somehow to leave it at that. For all of the terrible things he’d said and his persistent ego, he’d still set her arm straight and found that passage for them and cured her when everything had gone wrong. And wasn’t it her that had burst in on him after causing an avalanche?
”Wait...Matt, wasn’t it?” she started, but when she turned to face him, he was already too far to hear. Celes pursed her lips shut and turned away. She wasn’t about to raise her voice -- how awkward would that have been? He just wanted to leave. To leave and never see her again and she couldn’t argue that. No, she’d make sure of it even. If he so wanted space then perhaps she’d take the other path, long and aimless as it might be. She’d never wanted to go to Sonora, after all. She’d had enough of cold, metal military places to last her three lifetimes and if she never saw another one, it would be too soon.
So she crossed her arms, took a deep breath, and started down the path to the Crystalus Divider. Maybe she could find something better there where she could forget about her infuriating night with a man she couldn’t stand the sight of.
