No.288's first days in this world was nothing less than a gamble, the mage unused to traveling outside his village since he had been made head of it... What little supplies he had on him in the nature of some potions and ether, he used for trade in one of the small towns... a town where the people didn't seem to recognize... or at least question his odd appearance compared to theirs. With his medical supplies swapped for food and water, he couldn't resist asking around if anyone had seen others such as himself... Luckily, the mage's gamble had paid off and he had received the information he had sought! Apparently, individuals with long, pointy hats had been seen walking in and out of 'Headstone' Forest over the past few days... but none seemed as... talkative as him...
...Then there were some of his people here... Could it be that they had come from his world as well...? Excited, the black mage wasted no time in venturing towards Headstone Forest, eager to see his old friends again!
_____________________
No. 288 stood at the mouth of the forest, a creeping, crawling fog blowing out around and between the mage's armored greaves... Headstone was right... this place was ingrained with death... Nearly to the degree that he himself could taste it upon his lips. The air was cold, biting almost, the plant-life gnarled and twisted like the spirits that inhabited... He wondered why people referred to this place as a forest, though... it reminded him more of a bog...
Unimportant observations aside, rumors had it that his kin had been seen wandering around in here! He had to investigate! Ignoring every natural sign that said "STAY OUT", the mage ventured into the forest, the butt of his staff digging into the soft earth as he walked! ...The longer her stayed in this place, the more he was resolute to believe that there was unnatural magic at work here... Mist twisted and turned before his eyes, forming shapes... shapes he almost recognized as people... beasts... Sometimes they would look at him as he passed, other times they would simply drift by... but with each occurrence, No. 288 shivered...
...Why would his fellow mages ever choose this place...? It felt... wrong... Almost as if the Forest had it's teeth into him, compelling him to stay like a venus fly trap and it's sweet excretions meant to attract bugs to their doom! What possessed them to-
No.288 froze, spotting movement head through the thick, twisting air... an object... that resembled a familiar hat!
"Hello?" He called, cupping a hand near his mouth to amplify his voice! ...No response... Confused, yet invigorated, No. 288 pressed on, following the figure deeper and deeper into the forest! No.288 would come into a clearing of flat, grassy land... where several mages of both A and B variants stood about... oddly...
"My brothers!" No. 288 cried out, excited! Rushing up towards one of the A Models, No. 288 attempted to grab his attention... only for the other mage to not respond!
"H...huh...?" He muttered, waving his hand in front of the mage's face to get a reaction! ...It only blinked at him dumbly... blankly... Like it was...
"...Are they all....?" He asked himself, moving from mage to mage, touching some on the shoulder, others trying to strike up a conversation... Nothing. Not a word... not so much as a noticeable change in behavior beyond them just... LOOKING in his direction... Had these mages not awakened yet...? No. 288 watched as his dull, blank kin milled about in the clearing... appearing to be waiting for something... Orders perhaps...?
No. 288's first reaction was to get ANGRY! Someone had been making and enslaving mages again, building them stupid for grunt-work, no doubt! ...But on the other hand... it meant that his people were not doomed afterall! After the mist had been eliminated from the face of Gaia, No. 288 had all but lost hope in his race surviving onward... but now...? Perhaps there was still a chance!

[attr="class","sixShpost"]Heading into the forest Cater was not sure if this place was the wisest place to be. At least she'd encounter a lot of monsters and the like here. That together with the attacks on people had her wanting to learn more of this creature that had been disguising itself as others. Seemingly pulling from people's memories. If she encountered someone from Class Zero, she pondered how to figure out whether it was real or not.[break][break]
There was no telling if they were the real person or not, if they truly pulled from her own memories to create the form, they likely read minds. Why am I even trying to hunt this thing? Cater then wondered, which brought another question to mind: How was Caius thinking of finding this thing? But those thoughts would have to wait as she pushed through the bushes and found a clearing ahead.[break][break]
Not just that, but it appeared like something was there as what looked like pointy hats were in sight. As she was getting herself through the plants and into the grassy open area, she thought she heard a voice cry out. Cater held her gun at the ready while looking at the pointy hatted individuals that were just... standing there. There did seem to be some movement there, likely from the one that had let out a cry? Hopefully nobody was attacked. She honestly didn’t know the situation going on here.[break][break]
The beings looked a bit eerie, Cater wondered if they were some sort of fiends. So she kept her distance as far as possible. "Hello?!" she called out, not wanting to shoot first and miss the opportunity to ask questions. If they were hostile monsters, perhaps they'd run at her. Then again, the looks they had told her they'd more likely be spellcasters. If anything, she had a headstart for running away. Not a typical solution she'd take, but there were quite a number of them.[break][break]
"Why are you all standing here together?" Cater continued stoically, "this area is definitely not safe! I'm sorry if I accidentally crashed some kind of party." If it was a party, it was terribly dull one of standing around.[break][break]

The girl's voice seemed to fall on deaf ears, not a single being seeming to react to her presence... It was as if they were all machines, none of them complex or created with the intelligence to react to such verbal cues.... All but one, it seemed. No. 288 turned RAPIDLY as the girl's voice shot out through the open air, the mage having been far too preoccupied trying to get a reaction from his kin to even notice her approach! His already wide, glowing yellow eyes expanded even farther in shock and fear, the mage quickly raising his staff between her and himself!
"Wh...Who are you?" He demanded, his voice sounding almost like an.... approximation of what a human male's might be... It sounded human, even had human emotional varience in the tone of voice... but something about the way he spoke... something was off. He held out his arms to either side of his large body as if to block the girl's approach, to put himself between her and his people! He had to protect them, even if... ESPECIALLY if they were in this vegetative, robotic state! He doubted they could see anything around them or even understand what was happening right now! It was his job, as the Mayor of Black Mage Village, to keep them all safe...
...Ah, but it seemed it was this girl was concerned for them! No. 288's head tilted to one side, somewhat confused that this outsider would be concerned for someone that looked... drastically unlike herself! And speaking of which... Her outfit was... less than common as well! It looked nothing like how the green-people north of their village dressed... nor from the vague memories of Zidane and company! It was like she had come from another world...
...And considering where HE was now... She probably did!
No.288 slowly lowered his staff as the girl questioned WHY they were even here in a place like this, remarking that it wasn't SAFE! Yes... he had found that out himself... but he truly didn't have an answer why Black Mages such as himself would BE here... His kind REALLY didn't have a penchant for conflict after waking up... Is... is this what happens after death? They come here and revert back into this...? But then... Why was he spared...?
"...I... I don't know..." He offered weakly, glancing over his shoulder for but a moment before turning back to the girl. "I...I just found them here... like this..."

[attr="class","sixShpost"]Raising her voice seemed to have little effect as it stayed eerily quiet. It was as if none of these knew how to move, but she quickly heard some movement further away. One of the pointy-hatted individuals had placed himself between her and the other odd creatures while holding up a staff. Definitely a spellcaster, but one that spoke as Cater found out. She still held up her gun at the ready.[break][break]
A demand for her name, Cater was just blinking still from the fact that none of the others seemed to care about what was going on. Or was just something else going on that she was intruding upon. She didn't like it, it all screamed like problems to her. "Cater," she replied while slowly tilting her head a little, "and.. you are..?" The voice this creature had was male much like his body, but the fact all of these.. things looked similar to one another. Actually.. scratch that.. it was like there were only possibly two or three different appearances between them.[break][break]
Taking in their appearances, the others all had two different sort of appearances, but the one in front of her had some different garb. So a third type beyond the other two, she presumed. The creature had tilted his head, perhaps I shouldn't think of him as a creature, what kind of races are there here? Or is he some sort of golem? This situation was somewhat difficult, she was used to just everyone being human. Well, either that or l'Cie, but they were humans. And the higher beings usually had human forms too.[break][break]
The other had lowered his staff, making Cater slightly uncertain if she really should keep pointing her gun at him. Slowly lowering it, but keeping her distance, she was still wary of the entire situation as the other started explaining... how he found them like this. It seemed he didn't know what was going on either. "Not to sound rude or anything, but what are you all?" she asked with some interest while looking over the others. Perhaps they were possessed?[break][break]
Looking from all the separate individuals to the main mage in this scenario, well... the only one possible of communication, Cater figured they should do something. "If anything is taking control of them, perhaps someone or something is nearby causing this? We could try and survey the surroundings before thinking of a solution... It isn't like we can carry all of them out of here at once unless you got any spells for that?" she asked, wondering how powerful of a mage this one was.[break][break]
[attr="class","sixShly"] she's a sweet six shooter she knows how to get down
Cater... an odd name for a girl, but then, there was little about her that was remotely normal. Most primary of which, besides her glaring, almost frilly outfit, was the little mechanical tool she held in her hands... The Mage had seen nothing like it before! It almost looked like some of the cannons Alexandrian mist-boats used... but far smaller and compact within a rectangular casing... She had pointed at him before like it was some sort of weapon and now that she was lowering it, seemingly less on-edge, he was sure that it was. Still, she asked for his name and it would've been rude ON TOP of being uncalled for to just blow her off... She may have been a stranger... but she hadn't been overly hostile to him or his kin despite having every opportunity to be.
"I am Black Mage #288." He introduced himself, his wide yellow eyes narrowing just the tiniest bit as he took a small bow in greeting. "...And these are... other mages." Her next question was what exactly WERE they all, these beings with seemingly no face or emotive features, these creatures that shared all distinctly similar characteristics with very minute changes between them! Heh... #288 smiled... or what amounted to one for a being such as he... The awakened magical machine reached out with an arm, gesturing to his kin who remained completely stagnate and still, #288 never breaking eyes with the girl. Now he knew with absolute certainty that she had not come from their world. Gaia, unfortunately, had knowledge of the pointy-hatted killing machines thanks to their enslavement by the cruel hands of Alexandria. Their magic had touched almost all corners of the planet... and this girl seemed to know little of them... Is this what the afterlife was...? A cross-roads of worlds...? What an interesting, yet TERRIFYING concept...
"We're known as Black Mages, beings created from a substance called 'The Mist'." He explained, shifting uncomfortably from boot to boot. "We were born like the ones behind me... quiet, servile, meant to be used as.... as soldiers in a war. Over time, some of us, Like me, awoke... and realized what we were doing and fled... I don't know how these ones here were made, however... There doesn't seem to be mist here..." For the first time since the girl had appeared, Black Mage #288 turned to face a nearby Model A, standing right in front of him, glowing eye to glowing eye... and receiving little more than a blank, empty stare... a stare that distressed 288 so...
"I... am a Model C... I used to lead a village of us before I... died and appeared here..."

[attr="class","sixShpost"]The man's introduction was somewhat of a surprise to Cater. Her eyes widening at hearing it being more like a job class with a number than an actual name. Were these beings just numbered? It made it sound like the person was just fodder, not a very pleasing thought at all. He introduced the others as ‘other mages’. So perhaps they were all like this. Numbered entities and as the mage continued to explain things, she came to understand some of it better.[break][break]
As she was told they were ‘created’ from something called ‘the Mist’, Cater pondered on whether they were naturally born from this substance or someone actively was creating them. It was likely that they came into being and then someone went around gathering them. Instead of giving them names, they were just numbered and used as soldiers. Perhaps they never had a chance to come to understand and they slowly came to realize their actions? It was a difficult thing to pinpoint for the Cadet.[break][break]
As No. 288 spoke on not knowing how the ones there were made, Cater felt right to perhaps try an explanation: "this place, this realm, it brings people, creatures, and so on from all these other places. From different periods in time, maybe these came simply from your world into this one," she started while nodding towards the ones around them, "if they truly are the same as you remember them, they might just be the non-awakened ones from your home that have no clue what they are even doing right now. Is there a way to ‘awake’ them?"[break][break]
If they were going to be just like this until awakening of their own free will, Cater doubted that would be any time soon. Perhaps one could suddenly awaken, but that would just be a random surprise. Hearing that this person was a ‘Model C’ made her ponder if the others were A and B, thus the differences in appearances. However, the part where he spoke on having died made Cater take a step back.[break][break]
"Wait, wait, wait, so you're like... dead right now?" she asked confused, wondering if this meant that either he was pulled perhaps out of the afterlife or got revived somehow? What even is going on? Cater couldn't figure out how this place even worker anymore. "I think we should try and find some other help right now, you... you don't have any spells in trying to move all of them, right? They don't just follow us if we asked them to? I've not been here long enough to understand how most of this world works yet." She wondered if she should try and see if these mages were heavy or not.[break][break]
[attr="class","sixShly"] she's a sweet six shooter she knows how to get down
The girl attempted to answer #288's question as to WHAT this place is, though her response was vague and unclear to say the least... Implying that this realm took people from worlds and times infinitely separate from his own... It only seemed to affirm in the mage's mind that this place was what amounted to the afterlife... After all, the only reason he could possibly be here was that this was where souls go when they die... awakened or not. His kin...? It was likely these were some that had fallen in battle before they had awakened upon Gaia... Cater seemed to imply as much. #228 nodded heavily, quietly resigned to the fact that this was the fate that awaited the living.
On a similar subject to death, or fates worse than, Cater asked the mage if there was any way to awaken his kin and #288 simply sighed and shook his head. Slowly turning back to face his brother once more, the mage responded, his voice low and somber.
"We don't know what caused us to wake up. Sometimes it was in battle, other times it wasn't. There doesn't seem to be a pattern to any of it..." Cater seemed almost shocked that the mage would admit to his death so readily... almost as if it were a surprise! If this were the afterlife... and she had been here before him... Wouldn't Cater have a better idea of this world than he, himself would? ...Perhaps she didn't realize she was dead...? A logical explanation... Unlike his non-awakened kin and even some that had been blessed with self-awareness for a short time, #288 had seen the end of his life coming. He could feel it as his form began to slow down, his joints begin to lock, his mind begin to fade... He had enough time at the end to notice what was coming... Perhaps Cater did not. Perhaps her death was as sudden and instant as some of his own people's...
Tragic... He truly pitied her...
"...No. They don't respond to anything I say." The mage muttered as Cater suggested ways to get them out of here! "No mage I've ever met has spells that can just... get things to move. We... I am not that powerful." He turned back to the girl, a sad glow in his yellow eyes. "You don't have to stay, Cater. I'll... I'll figure something out."
[attr="class","sixShly"] loaded the bullets with my blood in the rounds
[attr="class","sixShpost"]Hearing how the awakening had no pattern what-so-ever was a problem. It wasn't like they could 'force' some sort of awakening. And it didn't seem like the chance of such a group suddenly awakening was likely. Cater didn't like leaving the group there either. While she was still being careful whether she should truly trust these people, she didn't like leaving them to be eaten by something either.[break][break]
"So they just... stand there," Cater said slowly while she started to move. While she still held her gun, she had come more relaxed as she started to move in a circular motion around the border of the clearing. Looking over all these different mages. She didn't really have any skills in trying to figure out how long they've been standing there. Looking back at #288, she asked: "did you find them just moments ago or have they been standing here for long?"[break][break]
If these mages just appeared in this land and gathered here, it must have some kind of reason, right? she doubted they'd be made in this world since this 'Mist' wasn't here like #288 said. "If they came from your world, it might be that they all gathered here for a reason," she continued curiously, "can you remember much of when you were... in a state like this?" she hoped she wasn't treading on the mage's toes like this. It might be a difficult subject.[break][break]
"If they were used in wars, it might be that they're trying to go back and fulfil their duties," Cater continued as she moved further along the border of the clearing to go around the mages, "which would mean they can unconsciously feel what might be the closest back to their home world." Coming to a halt and looking up at the sky, she didn't particularly see much. All this thinking was annoying, but she was getting some ideas and possibly there was a chance to get off this realm and return home.[break][break]
Turning around and looking through the forest Cater didn't feel like this was the safest place, but per chance they might be safe here for now? The black mages didn't seem to do much. "So... I do take it you can handle yourself in a fight, right?" she asked curiously while turning her head back, "I can do a variety of spells, but just like you I wouldn't be able to move a large group like this. Perhaps if I could try a summon, but since coming here I didn't seem to be able to reach out to any Eidolon." So calling out an Ifrit- or Golem-class Eidolon to pick up a ton of black mages was out of the question. Plus they might just walk back here.[break][break]
[attr="class","sixShly"] she's a sweet six shooter she knows how to get down
"Yes. They just... stand there." No. 288 responded. The Mage watched the girl closely as she circled around the parameter of the clearing, his gloved fingers anxiously closing around the shaft of his staff... He didn't like how she was watching them... It made him nervous... Like she was probing them for weaknesses or something... "I don't know how long they've been standing there... Normally, unawakened mages would be given tasks which they would carry out... M...maybe they were told to just wait here...? I don't know why... there's nothing here..."
It seemed that the girl was just trying to make sense about all this, musing that if they were all here... there must've been a reason for it.
Yeah... we're all dead... No. 288 remarked internally, his glowing yellow eyes narrowing somewhat! Cater was so.... interested in his people, it made the mage uncomfortable! It was like they were specimen under a scientist's supervision, things to be observed and probed... Given their treatment as beings less then human, objects of war and then dolls under the command of the evil Kuja... No. 288 was less than happy with giving away such information... let alone trying to dig into his past, a time of which he wasn't proud... It was so much easier with Vivi because it was from one mage to another... But he supposed it really didn't even matter now... This was the afterlife... and it wasn't even like they could die twice, right? There wasn't much to lose...
"...No... I don't remember anything before I woke up... Only that I was covered in blood and that there was the body of... of someone right in front of me the moment I did..."
More theories about them simply following orders... But what orders could they have been given...? No. 288 tilted his head, confused as the girl remarked how the mage's presence here, in this forest, might indicate a desire to return home... that they might wish to return home... But who gave them that order... SOMEONE must have programmed them to think this... Frustrated, No. 288 drug his staff against the soft, grassy dirt by his feet, none of the mages seeming to react to their conversation... though they did start to move, slowly shambling between each-other... no longer standing stalk still...
"I can cast magic, yes." No. 288 responded, the topic of the conversation shifting! "...Why...?" Cater shifted the topic quickly, remarking how she too could defend herself... and that she could TRY to move the mages herself with a summon... whatever that meant. The mage only stared quietly at the woman as she jumped from topic to topic, trying to keep up! One moment, she suggested that the mages might want to return home, which might explain their presence here, then jumping to the idea of moving them from this spot... Would it not be a good thing to wish to return to life...?
...No. 288 knew not how to react to this conversation or where it was going...
"Ms. Cater... Why are you so interested in us...? You don't have to stay here... We... I'll figure something out."

[attr="class","sixShpost"]Cater pondered how she could help with this present situation, but it just seemed not possible to think of anything. She didn’t really want to leave the poor mage on his own with all the non-responding sort of his kind. So right now she didn’t really know how to work with this present situation. If only the others were here, she thought to herself, I’m not the kind to think up solutions like this. More an action sort.[break][break]
Listening to 288’s story on how he ‘awoke’ from this state, Cater looked a bit concerned. "I... I am sorry for asking," she said a little slow, still she didn’t really know if there was anything there to implement in the present situation. The idea of leaving the mage behind wasn’t that well either, but perhaps she could try and look for aid elsewhere. Send someone here or maybe some people. It depended if the other mages also defended themselves if something attacked.[break][break]
Hearing 288 ask about her interest, Cater shook her head. "I am an Agito Cadet. We of Akademeia are there to help the rest of the world. We’re there to help the people," she explained a bit concerned, "anyway, I don’t think I know of any way to help right now." She scratched the back of her head as she made an annoyed grunt, "I’ll head to town and see if I can find anyone that might be able to help. At least see if there’s a way to either set up some sort of protection here or something else. That alright?" she asked, finally coming to a decision that that would be best in the end.[break][break]
